Yes, I avoid the South African ones too. In the last few days, however, I have discoverd the South American product. "Inkafresh" (yeah, I thought the spelling was wierd too) Clementines are as good as the Spanish product. They are large, easy to peel, sweet, and priced right at $3.99 for the 5 lb "gift box". They use a cardboard box rather than the wooden ones used in Spain and Morocco, and in my local store they don’t seem to be moving very well. Maybe people want them at Christmas only? Maybe people associate the wood box with quality?
Mandarins are good, but hard to find. Around my area the only place I ever see them is in a couple of Italian grocery stores.
As for clementines, I have found the ones from Morocco are also pretty good. Had some from S. Africa that were lousy.
You know–i am always hearing how wonderfull clementines are–and i agree they are good–but -for 17 yrs i lived in Chico Ca–90 miles north of Sacramento–and the manderins that were available off the back of hundreds of pickup trucks during the holiday season, were the BEST citrus i ever tasted–hands down—and cheap–like $3 for 5 lbs or $5 for ten!–easy to peel–delightfully sweet–they were the favorite snack of all my friends –till they dissapeared for the season that is–a group of us would gather once a week for poker or board games and there were often 5 or 6 10 lb bags that would dissapear in a hurry![:p]
Well, I’ll have to look around for some, might just get lucky. Last years crop sucked.
I had 3 of the 5lb boxes this season, yes they were extremely easy to peel and really sweet.
The local produce company has been out of them since 12-20. [:(]
The Spanish Clemantines that come out each December were especially good this year, and have, I understand, sold out early. This years crop was easy to peel, of good size, and sweet. Last year’s crop was not one of the better years, so the ones we got this year were especially enjoyable. The 5lb "gift box" was a marketing coup and they are famous within the produce industry for what they did to increase sales. I managed to find 2 more boxes today, but it looks like they will be all we get this season[:(] The competition from other growing regions around the world does not, IMO, compare with the Spanish product.
