Hold firm my boy, it’s hotter than hell 8 to 9 months out of the year. You think it’s was hot this summer in your trailer up north, wait until you try vending in Florida. Then there are the Tropical storms and hurricanes, you park you food trailer one day and find it the next day in Georgia…..It may look good now while your on vacation, but it’s HELL to work in that humidity……………………BillyB

OK. Came down to Florida to visit my parents for turkey day. My wife and my mother have both started putting on the full-court press about moving down to this God-forsaken country. I HATE it down here, but I have the feeling that sooner or later my wife is going to force the issue.

I’ve heard there are problems with hot dogging down here. I haven’t seen any carts on the streets since we got here, but I saw a trailer similar to mine on the beach yesterday and there were several trucks and trailers at a street fair over the weekend.

So… can anyone fill me in? Are the problems with dogging in florida specific to open-air carts, or do they affect enclosed trailers, too? For reference, we’d be in Volusia County (aDeland or Daytona area).

    Thanks,

    Stubby

Hey Lorna, did you have your flowered bus driving around Florida back in the 60’s and 70’s. maybe a cup of tea and a little peace pipe…………

How old do you think I am?  I will celebrate my 50th birthday in a few weeks. I wasn’t driving anything back in the 60’s!

I’d send him some crumpets and your special tea blend. LOL

Oh and I always jumped in the pool on Christmas Day. Just to say I did. Missed one year in over 30 plus years for I was stuck in Calgary, AB at the time.

Been here 8 years last Monday and loving it.

Stubby.  I’m in NE Florida.  Folks say it’s actually southern GA.  It’s a couple hours north of Daytona, so you would be generally a bit cooler here.   It’s typically only very hot a couple of months in the summer and darned cold several weeks in winter, but the humidity is killer.  Spring and Fall  here are generally pretty mild.

I do have the advantage of an open cart over a trailer here.  I have easy access to the slightest breeze.  Almost every day during the very hot months most coastal counties get a sea breeze by mid day followed by afternoon rain.  More days than not, storms hold off until after lunch sales.

FL does have less restrictions for trailer units, but like Curbside Grill stated, it’s the local scene that sucks.  Jacksonville has only had a very few street hot dog vendors until a few years ago.  A private property dogging situation is really about the easiest to do in my county.  You can’t get near most busy public crowded spots.

You and the Missus will have to decide whether to move here or not, but I’ll tell you right now the state government has been broken for over ten years and doesn’t look to be getting better any time soon.  If I didn’t presently have familial ties to The Sunshine State, I would probably go.  I’ve had my mind’s eye on NM or AZ for a long time.
    Good luck.

stubby; I have heard only horror stories about volusia county h/d as far as the state  goes there not to bad to deal with they have a web site you can go to and a te’ # they will answer any and  all ? you might have. need a commissary thats about the gist of it here. trailers that omit grease laden vapors ( grill or fryer) need a fire suppression system, along with the fire ext. hot water, etc. etc. if you look clean and in good shape they don’t look to far, real nice people that i’ve dealt with…. yes mighty hot here in summer my trailer was 110-115 every day from when i started (mid july) till just recently, thats even with roof and a secondary a/c humidity around 100% dew point 70. if i can be f anymore help let me know. Buck
    i’m originally from VT.

Yup, the humidity in the summer will get you good… I lost 25lbs in May (and have kept it off). No exercise other then wiping the sweat off your face. (And I’m from Michigan).

… I’m down here for Thanksgiving and I’ve swam very day (including over an hour in the ocean yesterday). I’m sorry, swimming at the end of november is nuts….

Are you kidding? It’s too cold to swim in November! We would be wearing our heavy coats! You’re as bad as those crazy Canadians… it’s NEVER too cold for them to go swimming!.  You’re scarry! [:0]

Honestly, you are talking to the wrong folks. You need to sit down with your wife and honestly tell her why you don’t want to move to FL. I’m a seventh generation Floridian on my mother’s side of the family. Florida is not all it’s cracked up to be. It’s one thing to be there for a vacation. It’s another thing to live there full-time. That applies to a lot of places. To experience a place as a vacation spot and as a residence is vastly different. I grew up in two “vacation destinations”… south FL and Western NC (Smoky Mountains)… summer in NC (during tourist season) and winter in FL (tourist season). I once seen a bumper sticker that said “If its tourist season, why can’t we shoot them?”. I understand the sentiment behind the words. As a resident in tourist destination, well it sucks.  Everything is geared to the tourist as opposed to the resident. Even worse, when the local governments feel the “rich retirees with disposable income” are more welcome than the “locals” who invariable enjoy a lower level of living.

I will NOT become a snowbird. Those folks are crazy- they miss out on the only good thing about living in New England (that being winter, of course). This is why I hate Florida so much, even when it’s “cold” its still danged hot. I’m down here for Thanksgiving and I’ve swam wvery day (including over an hour in the ocean yesterday). I’m sorry, swimming at the end of november is nuts. All I really want to do is ski.

Have the best of both worlds and be a snowbird. Come for the winters then head back north for the summer.

BillyB, you have to understand about hurricanes. You get a few days to decide if you need to leave or not. I spent most of my childhood waiting for the “big one” to hit S FL. My parents had it all figured out. If a hurricane was a biggie then we would head out to our home in NC and Dad could work up there until it was time to head back to FL. Back then (late 60’s early 70’s) you could still get out of FL at the 48 hour warning. Luckily David & I were living in NC when the big one that I had warned David’s family about all those years finally hit FL. Nowadays, if you are far enough north in FL, you still have time to head out to GA or AL… but you had better have a place to stay or be towing it.  Motels/hotels fill up fast.

I fear tornadoes far more than I worry about hurricanes.

Take your wife to Pierson and tell her that is where you want to move to! (I’ve still got family in Pierson) It’s such a thriving metropolis! And it’s the “Fern Capital of the World”! My cousin has a fern shed… everyone has a fern shed there I think. How about Barberville?  You couldn’t pay me enough to move back to FL… too many rules. If you want to operate a cart there, you need to contact the Volusia County HD and the Daytona &  Deland powers that be about licensing, etc while down there.  as for weather. It gets horribly hot in the summer and really cold there in the winter… I’ve seen my grandmothers duck pond freeze over thick enough for the hunting hounds to cross over in the warmest part of the day… more than once.
