Now that I’m here I’ll download and look at it, but I have to admit that my first response was, "Map, schmap." [:I]
Update: I had been going back to download different regional "schmap packs" but just this week noticed that the website is now allowing you to download ALL of the available guides (120 in total) for free at [http://www.schmap.com/guides/packs] in something called a ‘world megapack"! Might as well grab them all while still free (and no adverts).
Content is hit/miss — I viewed the San Fran guide and it was not bad, but Sacramento content was very much grade "C" (I had fun zooming around the map, though!). A nice feature is the ability to download a group of guides all at once — e.g., download all of California, Europe, etc. in one shot (good if you are stuck on the runway with a laptop):
http://www.schmap.com/guides/foodiemeccas (download group of supposed "food mecca" cities in one shot)
http://www.schmap.com/guides/california (download 10 CA cities)
http://www.schmap.com/guides/florida (Florida pack)
I did download it … Nice idea.
schmaps look like the real deal:
"Think Google Earth meets Frommer’s meets Mapquest. Log on to Schmap.com, and with just a few keystrokes, download the free Schmap player and any or all of 70 interactive guides to cities across the globe (for PCs only right now; a Mac version is scheduled for release in November). The writing is dry and the content is the standard hotels-tours-sights-restaurants, but the way the info is integrated is a marvel."
I am a little bit more impulse disordered than you are Gregg so I downloaded it after reading some reviews. It actually looks pretty interesting. It’s an interactive map software that has city attractions, restaurants, reviews etc. for a bunch of European and US cities. You download the maps; after that you don’t need to be connected to the Internet so can use on planes or with a laptop if driving around a city. It doesn’t ask for any info from you when you download the software so won’t add to your spam volume. I just got it so will be interesting to use it for awhile and see if is worthwhile. Fred
