Taking the drive in a couple of weeks. Probably going along Interstate 8 to Casa Grande, then north on I – 10, but I have time for detours. I’m sure there is lots of great southwestern places, but if anyone has any favorites I would love to hear about them.
There aren’t many good places to eat between San Diego and Scottsdale until you get into Phoenix. LJM’s comments about Gila Bend AZ are right on. There’s a number of Truckstops at the intersections of I-8 & I-10. Once you cross the AZ/CA border, it’s pretty barren desert until you get to Phoenix. Don’t pickup any hitchhikers on the route! Once you get to the I-10 junction, it’s not too far down to Tucson. There are plenty of places written up on here in Both Tucson & Phoenix. On the Roodfood home page, use the “Quick Searches” function and put in AZ and you will get plenty of recommendations for Tucson written by the Sterns. Not so many for Phoenix there.

Another alternartive to search is:
I too recommend Greasewood Flats. It’s a fun place. Best to go there around Sundown/ Early evening or Weekends to get the Max atmosphere. Dress warm and build your own fire, kick back and enjoy the entertainment. http://www.greasewoodflat.net http://www.greasewoodflat.net/
Pinnacle Peak Patio is a Tourist Trap Ripoff. Time was it was pretty good but time and quality of food has passed it by.The place itself is interesting to visit but the food is Lousy. It’s right across the road from the Greasewood Flats entrance. It would be interesting to visit and have a beer but spend your food dollars elsewhere.
Space Age Restaurant in Gila Bend, AZ. I have eaten there twice for breakfast. Food was good. Restaurant is more of a curiosity then anything else. Lots of interesting/unusual stuff inside. Check it out.
Pinnacle Peak Patio Steakhouse & Microbrewery in Scottsdale, AZ (# http://www.pppatio.com/home/default.asp). I have eaten there three times. Steaks were very good, and they brew their own beer. It also has a very interesting/unusual decor. The restaurant is not very easy to find. Bring a GPS.
I always suggest Greasewood Flat in North Scottsdale … Green Chili Burgers in a very rustic setting … super sunset site.
