Edited to reflect the consumption of a crabcake:
Oh, boy!
Bushie gave me a hard time when I told him that I passed through Round Top without stopping for pie. I tried to make it back on the return trip, but it just didn’t work out. [:(]
My only Roadfood by FedEx this year were crab cakes from G&M Restaurant in Baltimore. A friend heard me rave about them when I went there for my summer baseball trip and ordered them for me for my birthday!
Speaking of Roadfood by FedEx (UPS actually): yesterday we received our annual New Year’s brisket/ribs/sausage shipment from Black’s in Lockhart (I think they’re on the tour next year, aren’t they?). We’ve tried a whole lot of Q-by-mail over the years. Some are pretty good and some are mediocre, but Black’s is the only one where the Q is just like the you-are-there version. It’s not a compromise. And it makes the whole house smell like a barbecue pit as it warms up in the oven!
I have seen it first hand, the man likes his pie, so he knows of what he speaks! A happy holiday to you and yours mr chips!
I love buttermilk pie. I’ve only known one person in my life who made it.
Mayonnaise cake is another thing that I love and only one person ever made it. My Grandmother used to make one for me every year on my birthday. She once told me it took almost a whole jar of Duke’s. I assumed she meant the little jars, I don’t know for sure, but it was some great stuff.
Sadly, both ladies passed a long time ago.
The Chips family enjoyed the pleasure of the most delicious Pecan pie we have ever eaten. The pie from Royers Round Top cafe was the best pie I have eaten in a lifetime of eating great pie. Michael Stern’s photo and the description of the pie in the review on this site was so compelling I felt I just had to have it. The pecans in the pie are gigantic, truly Texas sized, and the pie is a sweet tasting sensation. Everyone should order it. We plan to order the buttermilk pie next
