Oodles of Noodles and Sam Choy’s are 2 of our Kailua-Kona favorites.
Amy Ferguson-Ota of Oodles makes incredible stir fried noodle dishes and you shouldn’t miss her upscale take on Hawaiian Shave Ice for dessert.
Sam Choy is one of the chefs responsible for the Hawaiian Regional Cuisine movement and his restaurants feature everything from upscale fish preparations to plate lunch specials. By the way, Sam is a "big-boned" gentleman whose corporate motto ("Never trust a skinny chef") is a Roadfood classic.
In the immediate area, the Ocean View Inn is a casual place that has some Hawaiian dishes included in its offerings. Go to Huggos on the Rocks, but only for macadamia nut pie and a cup of kona with the surf at your back. Heading south about a half hour toward coffee country, Keei Cafe is also favored by locals. Food is Hawaiian-Med. Quirky hours so call ahead. In the opposite direction, Merriman’s in Waimea is a destination joint and a very expensive one. If you want to splurge, this is top notch food from a celebrity chef. A little bit further in the same direction, and at the opposite end of the food spectrum, Tex Drive In in Honokaa is a favorite for locals. Typical drive in grub, Hawaiian style. The house specialty is malassadas, donuts of Portuguese origin and very addictive.
We will be traveling to the IronMan Competition in two weeks and are looking for some good "local" restaurants to try. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
