Other Cincinnati beers I remember my elders drinking were "Bavarian" and "Burger". I think they both went by the wayside in the ’60’s.Do any of you Cincy folks remember, or know the story of, a cheap but effective local beer called "Top Hat" that was available in this area in the ’80’s? The taste wasn’t much; the attraction was definitely the "cheap" part. I think it was supposed to be a revival of an earlier Cincy brand, supposedly named after the bar that used to attached to the Cincinnati Music Hall.
Like my husband, BillC, I have beer in my background. According to family history, my great grandfather was the burgermeister for Hauck’s Brewery that existed in the late 1880’s. I’d be interested in knowing more about Hauck’s if anyone has information.
Top Hat. WOW! Was that a nasty beer! Top of the Hat, bottom of the barrel.
I’ve got quite a bit of stuff on Cincinnati’s brewing history. What do you want to know about Hauck’s?
Wallyum – I’d be interested in knowing where the Hauck’s Brewery was located and what years they were in business. I’d also like to verify that my great grandfather Luzius Christoffel was indeed the braumeister, or at least one of the brewers. I have a book called "Yesterday’s Cincinnati" (by Luke Feck) with a picture of Hauck’s employees posed in front of the brewery with a few kegs of their product. My late mother told me that one of the men in the front row was my great grandfather, so I’m curious to know if there is any record of his name. Thanks for any info.
I’ll check my stash. [;)][8D]

Wow! I really remember the delicious barbecue sandwiches at the City View. Great with a cold one on the outside porch at night. I remember hoping all the way there that the pleasant, affable brother was on duty that night as opposed to the grouchy passive-aggressive sister. Remember her? She’d deliberately ignore you until she was sure she’d gotten under your skin. Still, it was a lovely place to spend a summer’s evening.

Slightly off topic, but it does have to do with regional beer, the uses one makes of it and the City View. Many years ago, the volleyball team I was on went to celebrate yet another loss by consuming any number of pitchers of Hudy. We were sitting next to a very loud juke box and I was telling the guy next to me a wildly obscene joke involving an, ummm, inter-special relationship. Since the music was loud, I was telling the joke in a shout. Well just as I delivered the equally obscene punch line, the song ended and I think everyone in the bar heard what the punch line was. One of the old waiters (white shirt, black bow tie, looked like he ate his meals out of the jar of pickled eggs on the bar) came over and asked me to leave. Amazingly enough, the only time I’ve been kicked out of a bar in my life.

I used to get a 12 pack long neck bottles of Stegmeier Beer for $2.99 at the Great American grocery store in Potsdam, NY.
NY has a 5 cent bottle deposit, but the 12 pack recyle deposit on Stegmeier was $1 instead of 60 cents, because 40 cents was for the heavy carton it came in.
Apparently, Stegmeier reuses the boxes and they don’t melt the glass down, they just wash the glasses.
It wasn’t uncommon to open a 12 pack and see broken glass in the bottom and label put on upside down.
But hey, it was 2.99 a 12 pack of bottles! And it was pretty good. A lot better than old millwater and milwaukie’s beast that was a staple on out college campus.
Also, used to drink Keystone light, Keystone, Ice, and Keystone Dry back then.
And I remember taking trips to Penn State just to get Yuengling (and visit people). Who knew they’d distribute out of state. It only took ’em about a hundred years to figure that out!
I grew up stealing sips of Koehler (Erie Brewing Co. — "Pour a Koehler collar") out of my dad’s bottles. Yick. I would never touch that stuff as an adult! LOL
Egad, Top Hat. $3.99 a case. Must be why I drank a lot of that swill in college!
My college roommate’s mom drank Wiedemann. We used to call it "Eagle Piss."

I worked in two former brewery buildings in Cincinnati — an old Hudepohl plant on E. McMicken (most recently home to Nu-Blend Paints, but I think they went under), and the old Burger brewery on W. Liberty (now Cincinnati Ballet). The old Hudy building had a gorgeous mosaic on the entry floor.

I remember drinking Primo Beer in Hawaii when I was 19. The first legal beer I ever had. Wonder if it is still around.
Primo is no longer brewed.

I always heard folks make fun of this beer’s name. Has anyone ever drank this stuff? was it any good? ………………

Yes, it was good. Once, at age 18 and recently back from Korea, I was in a bar in St. Louis between trains and the barmaid wouldn’t get me any beer other that that one, and she had a ball trying to make me order it out loud with everyone at the bar laughing their heads off at my embarrassment.

My god man …. Isn’t there any thing sacred ?? You got to let that acronym be our little secret or we’ll all have our Liberty Cards pulled and be put on restriction.
I spent a lot of years in the Philippines and saw a lot of them brown painted bottles. Not Navy, but been across S**t River a few times. One of the bars in Angeles before Clark closed was the "LBFM Bar."

Old Frothingslosh, the beer with the head on the bottom
"Schafer, The One Beer to Have When You’re Having More Than One".
My folks used to drink the Schaefer in the early 60’s. I couldn’t stand the stuff.
Same for UC, Genny, etc.
More recently, one of my vol. firefighter buddies always drank (warm) Genny Lite. Ugh!
At Cornell, I used to drink Pabst Blue Ribbon, Schlitz or Peils, before finally settling on Bud.
