Ketchup, mustard and onions (raw, not relish) with, on ocassion, vinegar based coleslaw, cheese and/or chili. For lunch today, I just had a great Chicago style (without the cucumbers or peppers–strictly so I don’t have to digest them again this afternoon) in Madison Square Park at Madison Avenue and 23rd street in NYC. The stand closes shortly, and has been serving long lines of hotdog lovers (Chicago style or New York style) all summer long. It is a first class dog stand, with vienna dogs brought in from Chicago every day. It is handled by Danny Meyer’s "Eleven Madison Park" restaurant and the proceeds go to the park restoration/maintenance fund.
Would that we could do the poll listings in order of importance, or in order of application, or maybe have a write-in line or two! [:0]
Agree wholeheartedly. I enjoy hot dogs with a multitude of toppings depending on how many I am eating at the time and how I feel. I like mustard and kraut. Mustard, kraut and sweet relish; mustard, kraut and hot relish; mustard and onion sauce; mustard and raw onions, and just chili.
Ketchup and onions!
Usually spicy deli mustard and warm sauerkraut but on rare occassions, cole slaw, which sounds weird but works really well as counterpoint to a spicy dog or Polish sausage.
The sooner this poll goes away the better. Where’s the tomato? Where’s the hot peppers? Where’s the pickle? This site has plently of entries devoted to the glory of the Chicago Style dog–exhibit A that a hot dog isn’t a hot dog without at least five toppings.
Chili, onions, grated cheddar. In that order.
My wife just read then poll list–her reaction?—Wheres the ketchup???? I thinks she’s crazy–ketcup is for burgers!! but……
I agree—asking for only one toppings skews this poll so much that the results would be pretty much meaningless. Myself, im partial to mustard, relish and onions. i think the only time i ever went with a single topping was when thats all there was!
Since they’re enjoyable so many ways, I usually get 2 or 3 at a time and vary the condiments. If I can have just one, it’s usually with relish and mustard – but it’s hard to have just one.
When trying a particular hot dog for the first time, it’s best to have it with just mustard. This way you can get a taste for the dog, and be able to judge it better. Most of the time, I just have mustard only on my dog. Yellow for a beef and pork German style dog (French’s) or brown for a spicy all beef dog. A good deli mustard like Admiration. Occasionally, when craving a chili dog, I either go to the Hot Grill in Clifton, or just cook a dog at home using their chili sauce which they sell to go.
The only other condiment I use is the unique relish from Rutt’s Hut. Homemade and delicious. Goes great with their deep fried dogs.
They left out celery seed and coney sauce – the thin kind.
I agree Michael, I ended up doing onions simply cause I like them on my dog no matter wich way I have it!!
Hey, the new poll question is unanswerable. [:(]
My favorite toppings for a hot dog are, in order of application: mustard, relish, sauerkraut and onions. For a chilidog they are: mustard chili, onions and cheese.
I could not more limit myself to just one topping than I could limit myself to just one breath a day.
