I just talked to my cousin in Palestine. The store that has the awesome pepperoni and sausage rolls is in Elizabeth on Rt. 14. The store is The Food Mart. If you are ever in or anywhere near Elizabeth, any extra amount of time you can afford to drive there is well worth it! I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

    In Wheeling: Figaretti’s – Italian.

In Charleston, WV: Blossom Cafe – Great food, wonderful art deco decor – originally a dairy bar.

The route is going to be 81 from Hagerstown MD through Martinsburg WV on down 81 to 77 and Charlotte. I’m hoping to have some really good regional food along the way. Thanks for the suggestions you’ve given me – any more?

Actually, I’m going to be going to New Martinsville, on the Ohio River. Then over to Fairmount area, and on down to Charleston.

His destination may not be close, but his path en route to his destination may take him near Palestine.

I’m not sure how close to Palestine, WV you’ll be, but there is a grocery store either there or in Elizabeth, WV, that makes their own pepperoni and sausage rolls that are out of this world! I think the sausage they use is homemade. They are by far the best I’ve ever had! Second best doesn’t even compare. I’ll check with my cousin who bought them for us when we last visited, and find out the name of the town and store for you.

Now, if you are willing to drive to the next county in either direction, you will find many great dining spots in Shepardstown and Berkeley Springs.

I suppose I should study my geography before I answer a question, huh?

There used an old fashioned soda fountain pharmacy in downtown Martinsburg.
    It’s a good place for a sandwich

Earl, Martinsburg isn’t close to any of those towns you name. And pepperoni rolls are all but unheard of here.
Doug, the hot dog place you mention uses hot dogs as a loss leader for their real business, slot machine gambling. You’re right, the dogs bite.[:D]

Avalon, are you staying in the area or driving through?

Take exit 14 and head East. Go past the tall building on the East side parralel to the freeway , City Hospital. To the 1st 4 way stop. On your right will be a small strip mall. There is a Kings NY pizza. It is a 5 unit family run "chain". I don’t consider it a chain, but… It is owned by Mom and Pop who have retired and moved back to Napoli. Oldest son Dominic runs the chain and each unit is ran by a direct family member, 3 brothers and 2 cousins.

Exit 13, King street, follow King east to Queen st. Major intersection and is downtown M’burg. Turn left. There is 2 or 3 coffee shops and a couple restaurants. The Blue White diner is a town favorite but I prefer the place 2 doors or so to the left. I forget it’s name. Both are good and pretty cheap.

Exit 12 and head East to the 2nd signal light, just past Lowe’s. Make a right onto Winchester Ave aka rte 11. About 1/4 mile on your right is Linda’s. Typical coffee shop, decent food.

Exit 5 Inwood, head East, do ya get the picture? Everything is on the East side of 81, for now.
Anyways at the East edge of the Hampton Inn is a small road, Dillinger Dr. (If you get opposite the Food Lion you have gone 2 far.)Turn right there and watch out for all the potholes. Where Dillinger Ts off is The Dining Room. Not open Sunday and only for brkfst and lunch M & Tuesdays. Good food but we quit going because of lousy service. The place is always busy. I think you have to be a local to get the good service. I hate to recommend it because of the lousy service PP and I got several times.

Also off of exit 5 is another Kings and a Chinese place that has good food. They are about 2 miles from 81 on WV 51.

    If ya want more, ask.

    MikeS.

Beware of the hot dog place – can’t think of the name, but it’s advertised on the signs on I-81. Avoid it like the plague. Cold, skinless dogs, almost inedible.

I would like to avoid the chains and eat where the locals go for simple good cooking. Thanks for any ideas. They don’t have to be right in Martinsburg, but not too far away.

What kind of food do you like?

Martinsburg is full of chains but maybe I can steer you somewhere good.
