JackStack’s is not in the building that Houston’s occupied at 95th and Metcalf. That building was a Bennigan’s. The building that Houston’s was in, wais next door and closer to 95th Street. It is now a Red Robin.
I lived within walking distance of them from the beginning of 1985 until the end of 1989.
Dave, Of all the places mentioned here, I think that the Stone Wall is closest to what I sensed you were looking for in your original post. It isn’t my favorite, but if you go to only one of the ones I mentioned, try that one. It is also a good spot for cocktails.

a new addition:
Ohana Hawaiiian Grill-7301 w. 91st. St.
My son lives at 78th and Foster, so I have eaten in the area a few times on my recent visits (He doesn’t cook.) There is a pizza place at 79th and Santa Fe. A couple of doors south is another place where we have had breakfast and lunch a couple of times. Both are decent and reasonable – senior moments (no names). There is a BBQ place on 75th between Foster and Metcalf and it is also decent. My son’s favorite place for lunch is Avelluto’s Italian Delight, 6522 Martway, Merriam.
Lidia’s is in the FreightHouse, right next to JackStacks. Lidia Bastianich is her name.
Have to agree with Buddy about pizza here. I live a block and a half from a place that everyone names best pizza in KC. Blech….
Check out this site as originally presented by bill voss:
It’s well laid out, authoritative, and reliable.
For definitve KC foods (unless otherwise noted, all addresses are previously listed or available at posted links):
Barbecue
Fiorella’s Jack Stack (high end of reasonable, not economical but one of the premier Greasehouses in KC. It’s in Overland Park, so that’s a plus)
Woodyard Bar-B-Que
RJ’s Bob-Be-Que Shack
Fried Chicken
Stroud’s
Hamburgers
Winstead’s (many locations all over town; there are at least two in and around O.P.)
Westport Flea market Bar & Grill, 817 Westport Road, KC (816)931-1986
Town Topic (cheap greasy burgers at numerous all night stands. Whenever presidential candidates are in town, this is the place they go for the "everyman" photo-op. Good people watching, okay burgers.)
Mexican
Manny’s, 207 Southwest Blvd., (816) 474-7696
Or, just head over to Southwest Blvd. and start driving. There’ll be more good choices for Mexican than you’ll know what to do with.
Some additional notes; there is NO good pizza in Kansas City (If you’re going to have some of the best Barbecue available anywhere, you’ve got pay the price by losing something else). However, there’s plenty of good upscale Italian in town. That lady, Lydia (can’t remember her last name) who has the PBS Italian cooking show, has a restaurant in KC. I think it’s called (of all things) "Lydia’s" (maybe not).
Okay, that’s it. I’ve got nuthin’ more to say on this matter. have good trip. Eat well and report back where you end up going.
Buddy
You can make it to Woodyard in no time, Dave.

You guys are killing me..LOL So much grub…so little time:) why not give me some close spots in KC just to expand on things a bit. And ya’all are right about having to have some Q. I’m a smoking, Q’ing madman myself and I like to explore other venues!

bill, that is an excellent site. It was the first place I became acquainted with Woodyard Barbecue. We visited for the first time last Christmas and absolutely fell in love. As far as I’m concerned, Woodyard has replaced LC’s as the Best’Que Joint in Kansas City!

As for Stroud’s, Bushie, their 85th Street location is gone more than a year now. Their northern location, Stroud’s Oak Ridge Manor, is still going strong at 5410 NE Oak Ridge Rd, Kansas City, MO. That’s a bit of a haul from Overland Park but some might think it’s worth it.Thanks Buddy. I hadn’t heard an update in a long time, and I thought I had heard that they were planning on another south location.
Since Dave wanted to keep it inexpensive, I wouldn’t recommend the place north, but as far as I’m concerned, "100 miles ain’t too far to drive for good fried chicken". [:p]
Mark, there have been numerous rumors about the much awaited reopening of Stroud’s south. Most recently they were supposedly working out a deal to take over the building that currently houses Snead’s Bar-B-Que at 171st & Holmes. Apparently the deal fell through and they are still without a home.
As for the distance and the expense of Stroud’s north location, I don’t think either one is out of line. The interstate system in KC allows you to get almost anywhere quickly as long as you know where you’re going. I would say it is probably a 25 minute ride from Overland Park to Oak Ridge Road. Just pick up I-35 in O.P. and head north to the Oak Ridge Road exit; there’ll be signs pointing you to Stroud’s all the way.
The price ain’t too bad neither. We visited at Christmas and didn’t notice any great price differences from the old 85th Street spot. You can make it more economical by sharing a dinner with a slight upcharge for the extra salad or soup that also guarantees free refills on those magnificent real mashed potatoes, over cooked green beans laden with hunks of smoked pork, and their over the top, thick, country gravy. If I recall correctly, four of us ordered three dinners with one extra upcharge and we ate like fiends with plenty of leftovers to take home.
With drinks and tip the whole thing wasn’t much more than about $50. Not too shabby for four hungry people, eh?
The only reason I didn’t recommend Stroud’s to begin with was because DetectDave was very specific in citing Overland Park without ever mentioning the greater Kansas City area. I wanted to keep things simple and close to his base of operations. Now if DetectDave wants to open things up a little and include all of KC and its environs, we can have one heck of a thread going here in no time!
Buddy
Yep. They order thru them. Owner Ron has a walk up BBQ outside that does a boomin’ business too. I think he uses Cattlemen’s as house sauce.

By the way, I took your sauces up to our little grocery store and let them taste. I’m pretty sure Roadhouse Sauce should be on at least 1 Southern Oregon Store’s shelves pretty soon.
If they need to know a distributor, Gourmet Specialties, a division of Unified Western Grocers, handles our products in northern California and the Pacific Northwest. One of those two names ought to ring a bell with them.
Thank you so much for your efforts! Glad you liked the sauce well enough to recommend it to your local store.

Boardroom is the one I was thinking of. Tells you how long it’s been since I’ve been out that way.
Buddy, one of my HS friend’s Dad and Grandad owned that Shopping Center long ago.(Might Still) They gave Mr. Hayward his start in business at that spot, then he moved out to 111th. I always loved his sauce.

bill voss, you are on the money with Boardroom Bar-B-Q on all counts. They are indeed long gone, but when they were in business they were located at 96th and Antioch. I wasn’t completely wrong though; Hayward’s is located at 110th and Antioch.
