Your trip sounds great. Unfortunately, I got onto 91 north of the Mass Pike, and so don’t have much to contribute. One thing you might consider, though: skip 95 completely. Instead, head north out of the City by whatever means and pick up I-287 East. Take that to 684 North. Stay on that till it ends and feeds you into US 22. A few miles away in Brewster is the Red Rooster drive-in–listed on this site and in RF 3d ed. and Eat Your Way–home of excellent chili dogs, cheeseburgers with fried onions, onion rings and soft ice cream. First rate. After the meal, and perhaps a quick round of mini-golf, back down 22–the left turn is a challenge–to the junction with 84, which curves northeast from that point on its route to Boston.

Stop in Meriden, CT, just off I-91, for a steamed cheeseburger. Ted’s is probably the most famous, justly so There are others in this region using the same unusual cooking style, and they can probably be tracked down on the Web.
