The wife was out at a work function which left me on my own for dinner so I stopped at Amazing Hot Dog in Bound Brook on my way home. I tried the "My Shimeero" dog, the one that has their 1/4 pound bacon wrapped dog with cream cheese and scallions. It was an interesting combination. I like all of those items separately, but I’m not a fan of them together. I also had an order of their fries which were really good, nice and crispy.

Big Mama’s Dog Pond, Milford, NJ
I was coming back from getting my fix at the Caramel Corn Shop http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=3038 in Easton, PA on Saturday and I stopped in Milford for a hot dog.
I had the boiled dog with onion sauce. This was a Hatfield kosher dog that was probably an 8 to 1. It had a nice snap and was served in a soft commercial roll. I enjoyed the spices that are used for this dog.
What made this a great dog was the home made onion sauce. This is made by softening onions and slowly cooking them in a BBQ type of sauce. It was an excellent condiment for this dog. The onions are neither firm nor falling apart. They have just enough structure to give a hint of a crunch that compliments the snap of the dog as you bite into it.
I found this to be an excellent dog and would recommend this place to anyone traveling in the area. It is just about 15 minutes south of Charlie’s Pool Room and the drive takes you right along the bank of the Delaware River.
Mama’s has an extensive menu that I anticipate sampling on future visits. As I was talking to the owner she said she was doing some research that day. She was trying to create a spring roll dog. She described it as a hot dog wrapped and prepared like a spring roll with Chinese style vegetables and flavorings. Sounds interesting to me.
I’ve stopped by Charlie’s Pool Room in Alpha twice in the past 2 weeks. Wow that onion sauce is good. It’s definately an interesting place.
According to this calculation from Mapquest, it’s 3 miles from the Parkway, Exit #136, South. They’re closed Sundays.

Hiram’s in Ft. Lee-good chili cheese dogs/good cheese fries-wash it down with cold birch beer from a tap.
Yesterday I stopped by Yianni’s Texas Weiners and Luncheonette in Linden. Located at 243 W. St. Georges Ave. next to Dante Tuxedos. Very easy to miss, so drive slowly. There is parking in the back. They serve a Texas Weiner in the same style as Manny’s and the Texas Weiner joints in and around Plainfield. Standard Grote & Weigel griddle frank topped with Texas Weiner sauce. This sauce is very similar to Texas Weiner ll in Greenbrook. The owner of Yianni’s also works at and makes the chili at Texas Weiner ll. But although similar, it is not exactly the same. I think the chili at Yianni’s is a little more flavorful. Big breakfast and lunch menu including a hot dog omelette. It’s called Yianni’s hot dog special omelette and has feta cheese & Tomato along with hot dog slices and eggs.
I also checked out Steve’s Hut on Elizabeth Ave. in Linden. Dirty water Sabrett (natural casing 11 to a lb). served barely warm enough. Ok, but not worth going out of your way for. Unless you crave Father & Son chili, which someone said is served here. I forgot to ask.
My last stop was the Galloping Hill Inn for a dog with just mustard. It was the best of the day.
How far off the GSP is Father and Son?
I was there only once with the group , but would love to visit again.
Mustard, carrots, cabbage, onions, at least.
Thanks for the update. I look forward to getting a Chicago dog in Seaside when they are open again.
I wish to express my sympathies and best wishes to these fellows. They have opened up the first great new hot dog place in New Jersey in quite some time. And that in itself is quite an accomplishment.
I hope the rebuild is fast. I’m sure all the customers they’ve attracted in recent weeks will return in droves, and then some. Good luck, guys.
Rut’s hut was on the travel channel’s hot dog show last night. It’s a repeat…but you get to enjoy all those dog places again!! Anyone know what’s in their secret sauce?
J’s Beef has been sold. Jack, the owner sold the store at 902 W. St. Georges Ave. in Linden and will be moving to the Seaside Boardwalk. He will have a limited menu that will include the Chicago dog, but with a natural casing dog rather than skinless. The Linden location has been sold to Father & Son. If all goes according to schedule, Father & Son will be in the building to start construction around April 1st. Glad to hear of Father & Son’s comeback, but sorry to lose J’s Beef. It was the only place to get an authentic Chicago Style Hot Dog. Now we’ll have to travel to Seaside.
Amazing Hot Dog will be closed temporarily due to a fire. Read on.
Eric Eisenbud and Matt Applebaum, owners of Amazing Hot Dog, are saddened to announce that there was an unfortunate electrical fire at their recently opened restaurant early Saturday morning, February 25th.
The restaurant – which opened on January 16th and is located at 148A Bloomfield Avenue in Verona – is temporarily closed. No other stores in the Brookdale Plaza strip mall were damaged, and thankfully no one was injured.
Matt and Eric fully intend to rebuild and reopen Amazing Hot Dog within a 6-8 week period.
