"The Straight Story" is terrific. As much as I love David Lynch’s more out-there stuff, "The Straight Story" may be his best film.

Lynch’s past record is what drew me to this movie, and while it was VERY different from his other stuff, I agree with your feelings. It remains the only movie I saw and then immediately went out and bought.

This movie got great reviews from all the critics and is on a lot of their all-time best lists. I think it had distribution issues and never got good exposure. I’ve seen it about 8 times. DeNero is like you’ve never seen him before.

A friend showed me The King of Comedy and also told me that it was one of his favorites of all time. I guess the build up prior to seeing it had a negative effect on me. I almost fell asleep. But, aside from the strong cast, the film was directed by Martin Scorsese, so if you are a fan of his, you do need to see this one.

If your movie tastes swing more modern, DeNiro played a similar role in the equally well-cast, but far more disappointingThe Fan.

Desert Dog —-after the game——I assume you meant the Giant/Green Bay
game—if not forget this post—I could not watch anything at all after
that game. I was so excited I couldn’t even sit down. I have been a Giant
Fan since 1936 when I first heard of a player with a name that knocked me out!
"Tuffy" Lehman a future HoF running back for the Giants. But it was a tough
decision because the Brooklyn Dodgers had a team then and they had a player
named "Bruiser" Kinard. He might be in the HoF also. Big decision. Go Giants.

"The Lookout" is a nifty movie starring Joseph Gordon Leavitt, who is best known as the kid from Third Rock From the Sun.

Leavitt is becoming quite a good actor. Check out his performance in "Brick", another movie that deserves to be on this list.

In "The Lookout", he play Chris, a young man who is developmentally disabled after a car accident. The film deals with Chris as he struggles against his condition and falls in with some shady types who he thinks are his friends. They’re not.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s "There Will Be Blood" is terrific, with a wonderful performance from Daniel Day Lewis. Has DDL ever been in a bad movie?

The movie focuses on Lewis’s character’s rise as an oilman, taking place in one tiny California town that barely exists on the map. The main character will do anything to succeed.

I loved the PTA’s "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia" but I wasn’t crazy about "Punch Drunk Love", though I liked most of it. "There Will Be Blood" might win the director an Oscar. DDL is definitely walking away with Best Actor, imo.

"The Taking of Pelham 123" is a great caper movie (and, Hollywood being Hollywood, is being needlessly remade next year) with a great cast. Robert Shaw is pure ice in this movie. Don’t get in his way.

I actually ordered it through Netflix and will be watching it tonight after the game. Can’t wait!

I’m surprised no one has mentioned "Pulp Fiction." You either love it or hate it. I loved it myself and watched it numerous times. I’m not a great Travolta fan, but he was outstanding in this film.

DeNero is like you’ve never seen him before. I also saw "The Commitments" about 4 times.

Hey, I’ve got a few Maddin flicks in my queue too — haven’t seen them yet, though.

Last obscure film I saw was "Vanya on 42nd St"…not bad for a ramshackle performance of Chekov.

    A couple random movies:

    Man spricht Deutsch –

A German film of self-depriciating humor depicting a German family on a summer beach vacation in Italy. It really plays up the typical German Tourist to great effect. Try to find it with subtitles if you do not speak German, the voices are a necessary part of the film.

The Gods must be crazy –

I saw this film 20 some odd years ago and remember laughing my a** off. An African tribesman gets hit in the head from a coke bottle that is thrown out of an airplane, and is convinced by his family that he must return the strange object back to the Gods who dwell at the ends of the earth. I think the narration was what made it so funny. Would love to see it again sometime to see if it still tickles my funny bone.

I really liked Eastern Promises. I’m a big David Cronenberg fan.

Couple of excellent movies I’ve seen recently: Eastern Promises
    Return to Paradise

Both were outstanding and quite gripping.
