A couple that we’ve sampled from our travels that come from breweries.

Tommyknocker Brewing Company (Idaho Springs, CO)
    http://tommyknocker.com/ourSoda.html

    Appalachian Brewing Company (Harrisburg, PA)
I couldn’t find a link to it, but it is available at their brewpubs:
Harrisburg, Camp Hill & Gettysburg PA
They just received approval to sell it locally through some retail outlets as a test market. The kids love this one as well.

Here in Greenville SC, you can get Thomas Creek root beer. The pizza place where I used to work, Michael’s in Easley, has it on tap. It’s very good.

I don’t know, guys, we have a few indie soda bottlers here in CT, andHosmer Mountain in Willimantic (formal review forthcoming) makes a seriously excellent antique root beer with brown sugar. Also, the Sycamore Drive-In in Bethel makes their own root beer, and it’s among the best I’ve ever had…and I wish they’d bottle it! [:p] Chris

Ann brought us a six-pack of "Dang’s" Butterscotch Root Beer when we visited Milwaukee last November. It is a real oddity. I hope she will bring a six-pack to Mobile so that many of you can sample it.

Sprecher’s is very good. We could buy it here last year, but now it seems to be off the shelves… Same with Cheerwine. I got Paul to pick up some Cheerwine to bring to Mobile for Samples!

We used to make and bottle our own, using the Hires Extract and recipe. We even had a manual bottle capper…in the days before screw-caps. Unfortunately we had several bottles in a batch explode due to unstable temperature control during the ‘aging’ process. They damaged our laundry room and the flying glass came very close to hurting one of the kids. That ended our experiment with Home-Brewing Root Beer. The earlier batches were pretty good.[:(]

My favorite bottled brew was one called Port Clyde Quencher. It was only available during the summer at Wasses hot dog stands in Maine, and a few small stores in the area. The brew was available only during the summer as it was bottled by two young kids, still in school, who vacationed in Maine during the summer and did this as a summer job. I am not sure if they still bottle it, as they are probably now in college or even done with school.

There used to be a place in Bloomington, Il. that made their own root beer and it was really, really, good, especially with a couple of chili dogs. I had a great date there once in college. Their name was O&W Root Beer and I’m 95% sure they are no longer there. Anyone know of other places that make their own? Cadillac Brewing Co near Bar Harbor, Me used to make it. Is it hard to make it at home?
