No Bham Babe, I didn’t know Golden Rule had been around that long. With all the growth in and around Irondale, I’m glad it didn’t go the way of so many other businesses. Now if I could just get home to Birmingham for some Greek food!
Awww you are welcome! I have to go past there all the time and I love that smell. Ya know, it never feels like fall around here until you drive down old highway 78 and see the windows all lit up and the smell hanging in the fog [:D][:p] Did you know that there has been a Golden Rule BBQ since 1891? I had no idea it was that old. Neato.
Neely’s Interstate BBQ in Memphis.
Man, Bham Babe, thanks for bringing back some good memories! I remember rolling the car windows down on the way to the library in Irondale, just to get a whiff of the Golden Rule’s barbecue.
Of course, even though Dreamland BBQ is a bit "chained out," they’re still pretty good, wherever you can find them. I like my ribs a bit more tender than the way they make them, but they are darn tasty.’
I’m also a big fan of Bob Sykes bbq in Bessamer, just on the far side of B’ham. It’s a traditional stop for us on the drive to New Orleans. I love to see that giant hearth when you walk in the door and all that meat cookin’.
Plenty of good food in Monkeytown. Suggest you look at online Montgomery Advertiser restaurant section if in doubt. You know how to do that, right? [8D]

Look in Stern’s latest Roadfood book if you have that!
In Holly Springs, Mississsipi go to Phillups Grocery and wait patiently with the other pilgrims for a good hamburger. Stop at the
Welcome Center at the Alabama line and get a copy of the pamphlett, "100 places to eat in Alabama before you die."
Big Bob Gibson’s BBQ in NE Alabama is very good.
At the Georgia line try the caramel milkshake at Pop’s Charburger.
Through Birmingham, go to Jim ‘N Nicks BBQ in Trussville. You won’t be disappointed. There is also Golden Rule BBQ in Irondale and for heavenly hamburgers, try Hamburger Heaven 🙂 also in Irondale.
Really depends though on your area. You’ll likely find all kinds of bbq here that varies from area to area. Stay away from Greek places offering bbq. It’s just not right.
You can also do a search on Birmingham and find a couple of post that I and others posted some lists on. Good eating down here.
Big B, if that’s what you’re after, I wouldn’t recommend that you go through B’ham and Montgomery. Try State Road 72, which will take you through Muscle Shoals and Huntsville. That is a veritable b-b-q alley. I can’t recommend a particular place. I try to stop a different place every time, but there are many local joints, depending when you feel like stopping.
Looking for some great southern cooking, Burgers and B-B-Q
