The ones in Milwaukee had waitresses wearing poodle skirts and calling you "hon". They were 1950’s themed and even had Green River Soda as a choice. I have no idea if they were related but it sounds like they might have been. There was one a block away from Leon’s Frozen Custard, it was originally a Pancake House. After the Mel’s Diner closed, the building was razed and now is a Chipotle. The other that I know of was on Greenfield Ave. in West Allis and it became a Chinese restaurant and a family type restaurant.
I don’t think the Milwaukee ones were related. I’m happy to see that eight more locations on the Gulf coast will remain open as they have other "operating partners" according to the newspaper article. I have frequented the Venice location many times and found the comfort food they served to be great. The biggest negative I would note is the constant presence of 50/60’s music even in the rest rooms. I know it’s part of the theme but it really gets old after a while
We had several in Milwaukee but I don’t think they lasted a year.
Actually a college education works great once you add about 20
years experience to it.
Guess I’ll save the money we saved for our kids college education!
Lee it probably depends on which came first the chicken or the eggs (over light,
with home fries and bacon). I wonder who recommended the renovations that cost
sooooo much ? Probably the owners son, a Harvard Grad in business administration.
Reminds me of the story of the hot dog stand owner in New Jersey. Had a great
location and did well enough to send his son to college.
After the first year the kid came home and told his father he had better cut back
on buying and services because of the depression. So papa took junior’s advise,
after all he was a smart college educated young man. So he shortened his hours,
gave a little less kraut with the dog and sure enough in no time at all business
was so lousy he had to quit. But he was amazed how smart his kid was to predict
the whole thing after only one year.
As Confusious once said "Anyone who listens to a college kid should retire to the
farm and grow Bay Corn". That was Irving Confusious, Far Rockaway High School
class of ’33.
Just saw this thread…any connection to the Mel’s of the Alice TV show…or just a coincidence?
We miss Mels………
But, on the other hand, its very very difficult to make money charging $4.00 for breakfast, and spending 1/2 million to renovate. It just does not add up.
Its been a very successful chain until recently, and when you spend so much money to renovate then the prices must be raised accordingly. I guess this did not happen, and it caught up with the owner. Very sorry to hear this happen.
Here is an update:
Mel’s puts out an above average burger too and some wonderful Navy bean soup. Still going strong here in Naples/Ft Myers/Bonita Springs. [8D][8D]
Bonita Springs, FL
The best breakfast in Florida, as far as I am concerned—I have never been to Sarasota or Bradenton sites—
love Mel’s in Naples and Clearwater—
I have felt that Bradenton has gone down hill for years so this might be an indication.
In Sarasota and Bradenton, Florida. See this article:
