I am starting to think I was brought up in the WRONG PART OF THE COUNTRY. Another absolutely toothsome delight that we miss out on here in landlocked semi-arid Colorado (but we DO have real mountains).
You have a real talent for describing the experience of eating. It’s clear from your experience with the Crab salad roll you not only enjoyed it but remember it and communicate it so well. If I had the time this weekend, I would try to get to Maine!
I have only seen lobster rolls (and have always found them pretty pricey). Thanks for the tip … haven’t seen these in the DC area.
Lobster rolls , in particular rolls of the quality found at Red’s Eats in Wiscasset, Maine (get drawn butter AND mayonnaise, you only live once) seem to always take center stage as the classic, Down East roadside delicacy. This unfairly draws attention away from another uniquely (and arguably more perfect)Maine gustatory delight; that of the humble and elegant Maine Crab salad roll. A split type hot dog roll butter grilled and stuffed with fresh hand-picked local crab mixed lightly with mayonnaise. A slice of iceburg lettuce is forgivable but not preferred. Nothing should interfere with the cool, fresh taste of crab. The buttery crunch, the soft "give" of the grilled white bread roll and the mayo enhanced crab make for a classic nosh amidst the pointed firs and rocky coasts of Maine. Try Red’s Eats, Wiscasset, Fat Boy’s Drive-in in Brunswick, and Crosby’s in Buckland.
