I picked up a 1.5lb can of these at Costco about 10 days ago for 11.99. A pretty darn good price I do believe. They were grown in Australia and/or S. Africa according to the label.
No, nuts do not contain cholestrol. Cholestrol is a steroid produced by animals. They are hugely high in fat and calories though.[:(]
I loved Costa Rica too and I think I managed to eat your share of macadamias for you, Paul.[:I]
Quite the opposite–i’ve read that it actually lowers cholesterol. It is high in fat but it’s the good kind.
I could be wrong on this, I think Macademia Nuts are really high in cholesterol. I’m sure I read they are crazy high in it.
I wish I had known that. I have been in Costa Rica several times on a birding trip. Wonderful country, great beautiful scenery and great folks. I enjoyed their coffee but I missed their macadamia nuts.

They grow macadamia nuts in Costa Rica too. I pleasantly discovered that on a trip there.
The macadamia tree takes 10 years before they start bearing nuts for harvesting. That’s the main reason for the high cost.
Macadamias are native to Hawaii, but I think they’re being grown in Australia now as well. Nowhere else in the US, though.
Macadamia nut oil is GREAT for cooking, but a tad on the expensive side. I’ve sauteed chicken with garlic and macadamia oil–the oil gives it a nice buttery taste.
While on the big island, I took a tour of the macadamia groves, their packing house and of course their huge gift shop.
I was surprised how difficult the nut was to extract. I guess that and the shipping cost is the reason they are so expensive. I wonder if they are grown anywhere in the USA?

Try grinding them up and using them in a crust for white fish, or in butter to put on the fish…yum!
Thank you jinjo!
Now that Mauna Loa Macademia Nuts has been purchased by Hershey Co., their products should become ever more widely marketed across the land (and the world). I’m not complaining mind you. I just bought some hershey stock.
On my one and only trip to hawaii,i had Mauna Loa onion/garlic macademia nuts.I’m addicted, I cant find that flavor anywhere.Any tips?
