Broccoli rabe, or rapini, is a wonderful green vegetable. It is slightly bitter, but blanching it takes away the bitterness. It’s wonderful when sauteed with garlic, olive oil and red pepper flakes, and served with canellini beans and Italian sausage.

That episode on the cheesesteaks introduced me to broccoli rabe as a condiment. I never heard of it before, as it is not a standard on Baltimore’s menu. Anyway, this sub place near my house offers it, and it is great.

Yes, he’s won a few times. Where he was really overmatched, though, was with the cheesesteaks.

I like that show also. I think he’s trying to bring some recognition to local eateries. So much so that after his throwdown with the puffy taco lady of San Antonio I drove from Austin to go try some. They reaaly were good.

The judges will choose the traditional method 90% of the time. Sometimes though, he just genuinely has no chance. Like the one where they made jambalaya. He was completely overmatched there.

You mean he gets to win sometimes? I thought he always lost!

FYI, Throwdown with Bobby Flay is going to have him up against the Biscuit Lady at the Loveless Cafe in the episode titled "Biscuits and Jam" which is to be shown this Sunday at 10:00 PM Eastern time, and then again at 1:00 AM.
