Didn’t say it affected the pizza, just I’m not a fan of eating it that way….like I said I’d have to try it….and eating spaghetti using a spoon won’t change the taste…just garner strange looks from Italians…just don’t put ketchup on a hotdog or pasta!!!!!!!!!

Not a fan of that slicing pattern, but the pizza looks like I’d try it.

What does the slicing pattern have to do with taste? Or is this like using a spoon to roll up spaghetti?

I love Davenport’s pizza, and still have it as often as possible!

Davenport’s looks like a great place to visit.  I doubt I’ll ever get to Mountain Brook, AL but if I somehow do I’m definitely stopping in!

This thread (and the linked article for that matter) looks like it was started BEFORE the passing of Jim Davenport a couple of days ago. If so, that’s about as eerie as it gets.

You are right!  It is strange.  And Davenport’s was named for Jim Davenport but he had nothing to do with the restaurant…although the owner was a friend. The owner wanted to use a famous name to draw in customers because Birmingham was not at all familiar with pizza when the restaurant opened over 50 years ago.  He picked Jim Davenport.  They only serve pizza and salad, and the pizza sauce and salad dressings are a secret to this day.  The daughter of the original owners carries on as her mother and father did through the years.

Bob Carlton’s a hack but once every year or two he puts out a decent column. http://www.al.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/02/davenports_pizza_palace_where.html#incart_river_home http://www.al.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/02/davenports_pizza_palace_where.html#incart_river_home is one such example. I grew up on this pizza and it’s a great time capsule joint, still running strong after 50+ years.
