Yes,the Stonehill Winery is my favorite place to eat, when I come to Hermann.I have to go to the Swiss Meat place the next time there.
Ted Drews is a must, while in St.Louis. It is the best ice cream place any where. For dinner the Boathouse in Forest Park is a great place to eat.
Weekend long road trip next month or October is planned for visiting Hermann area, with the main course from Swiss Meats. Taking a cooler and going to buy up all kinds of interesting sausages and goodies.
I’d do it sooner, but we’ve had a two week stint of 100 degree weather and my personal preference for traveling is during more enjoyable temperatures!
Going to take in some of the winery offerings as well and hopefully find some other fun places. The ice cream place in Jeff that Jim Ross mentioned sounds like a candidate too.
Hmm…maybe I’ll have to check into it more and go during Oktoberfest!

When you hit St. Louis, go to the Hill, which is an old Italian neighborhood on the south side just off I-44. Cunetto House of Pasta serves gourmetquality food at blue-collar prices. If you have any room left for dessert, it’s a short drive to Ted Drewes on Chippewa.
I wish I had seen this sooner. The Swiss Meat Market is just outisde of Hermann and has amazing pork products. Lots of good german cured meats, smoked pork, and freshly butchered items.
Trip report – We ended up eating at the Stone Hill Winery restuarant after a very good tour given by the owners Granddaughter. Food & wine were both excellent. There are literally dozens of winerys in the area and I ended up tasting and buying more than I’d planned.
Hermann itself is very interesting with a plethora of 19th century buildings and history.
The drive from Jefferson City to St. Louis on MO 94 runs along the Missouri River and is very scenic with a winery on every curve it seemed. The traffic on a Wednesday wasn’t bad, but I’ll bet it gets crowded on weekends.
The highlight of our day was ice cream at the Central Dairy in downtown Jefferson City. It’s a functioning dairy with an ice cream store out front. There is an incredible variety of flavors, the 3 we tried were all delicious. They’ve been in business since the 1920s and the ice cream parlor has the feel of history. If I were better with a digital camera I’d write a review because the Central Dairy is the definition of a roadfood place.

Well, I’m not too sure about Hermann…but there is a nice little place in Warsaw (3 hrs. approx) that everybody should try. It’s called Diantha’s. Really good home cooked meal place. The rolls…well…they are gigantic! The pies…they are that way too!
I’m not sure of any places going on that route though….
I would love to recommend a specific place in Hermann, but when I have been to the Maifest I have always eaten in the Catholic church basement – which is only an option during the Maifest. A couple of the restaurants in downtown Hermann (what else is there?) looked very interesting when we were last there. However, I don’t have a clue as to their names and I haven’t eaten at any of them. It still should be a great place for lunch. Don’t forget to tour the winery while you are there.
Once again I’m looking for advice. I’m going to be traveling from the Lake of the Ozarks to St. Louis next week and have a whole day for the trip. I’m planning to take the scenic drive on Rte. 94 along the Missouri River. I’m thinking of lunch in or around Hermann and then dinner in St. Louis, with breakfast the next morning at the the Goody Diner. We’ll probably spend the night in a motel in Hazelwood area. Any suggestions for lunch in Herman, dinner in NW St. Louis area would be greatly appreciated.
