I loved this place.
Don’t forget the onion rings. They served some of the finest onion rings in this part of the world.
He was a trip. I remember going there several years ago in the midst of a softball tourn. and he came and sat with us, asked where we were from, and chatted for awhile. Good burgers and fried hot dogs. I hope someone takes it over and keeps it going.
Mr. Herlocker was a wonderful man. He would watch what you ordered and if he thought you were ordering just little bit of food because you were short of money he would say "Order what you want and pay me when you can".
Sorry to hear that the Herlocker is closing. Hubs and I used to go there sometimes on dates, back in the day. When I worked in downtown Charlotte, I always went down N. Tryon to the 29-49 connector to take I-85 on home. Sometimes I’d stop at Herlocker’s and get plate lunches to go for supper. By the time I got to China Grove they weren’t hot anymore, but the food was still pretty good, even reheated.
Tried calling…guess they have already closed. I started eating there when it was four booths and eight bar stools. Deep fried hot dogs, decent (not great) BBQ and the Herlocker Burger!
A Charlotte, NC drive-in is scheduled to close. http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/15287919.htm
