Cincinnati-based family ice cream company Graeter’s is looking to expand its business to Chicago.
CEO Richard Graeter is coming to Chicago this week to check out four sites that could help establish the ice cream shop in the Chicago market. The company has 40 retail locations in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.

It’s all about the freight. Here in Chicago it was selling for $4.99 a pint ($3.99 on special). The further west you go, the more expensive it will get.

Actually, I’ve seen it for as high as $7.99 at the Whole Foods in Evanston, but it’s generally about $4.99 or less at the Treasure Island in Wilmette. The really good thing about the Treasure Island is that they have something like 10 or more flavors, including my favorite toffee chip.

Graeter’s was available in Kansas City for about 6 months before it left. Hy-vee grocery stores carried it a $5.99 a pint. Needless to say it didn’t sell well when Ben and Jerry’s was $4.49 a pint, and Haagan Dazs was $3.99.
