Alright this may be a stupid question but I’m not getting much help from my HD on this question about a fire suppression system.

    Ok here it goes:

    – I realize that every area is different so my local laws may not be the same as yours and therefore your information is taken at face value and I will have to ensure to get an appropriate answer from my local governing body.

    – I am only going to be selling Hotdogs and the items that go with that.  Our dogs are boiled so no need for a grill or fryer.

    – With that said one of the HD people told me since that is the case I won’t need a hood vent.

    – So if I decide to use some of the propane steamers to help lower my electrical needs will I need a fire suppression system since I would be using propane?

Any thoughts or suggestions from the collective group that has done this before would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Sam

From what I have researched, most follow a similar pattern.

HD governs food safety, and cleanliness.

But have no actual jurisdiction over the other areas….   electrical, plumbing, fire safety.

Although, that will not stop them from giving their opinion.

So as far as THEY are concerned, no THEY may not require a hood.

But fire & safety, or fire commissioner may say different.

HD will have no clue ( or at least very little clue ) about what is or is not allowed by code for another department.

I know that where I am, if you have propane for anything, then you need an approved hood and extraction fan.

    All based on your BTU’s.

Because you cannot burn propane in an enclosed space without the air exchange.

And that means a fire suppression system as well.

Where I am, all of it can only be done by certified installers.

Gas guy for all the propane lines and connections.

Approved guys for the hood and fan.

    Fire suppression guys.

So 3 different sets of people required.

    PLUS the inspectors.

    and about 25 grand.

From my perspective a waste of money, just insure you have the basics, fire extinguisher, perhaps a well labeled and accessible  cutoff valve.

That’s what I’m thinking.  Just waiting on the HD to respond.

    In my city.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner….

    and

The Fire Marshall – from the fire dept….

    Are 2 totally separate departments.

    2 separate inspections.

    Just sayin..

So the Fire Marshall came in for a random inspection at my B&M location, while he was here I asked him all about it.  No surprise he had no idea!  He checked on it and came back to me with an answer.

No hood needed, but I will need an exhaust fan and obviously fire extinguishers.

He also said the the NC Department of Transportation will be the ones to determine if I need a fire suppression system.  (Great another agency to get involved)

They do not require the propane to be inspected, but if I want they will gladly check the propane system out for me once I install it to check everything for me.

So now its off to figure out who to contact at the NCDOT.

Thanks Blakkmon for all the information!  And I’m reading your thread now about your build, trying to figure out how to do the back door on mine!
