Buffetbuster, Mom said “When, where, what pie?”
Hey, that’s great! I will be contacting you beforehand so that we can make plans.
There is pie at every stop on the ride and even online debate about what is the best pie.
Once they sample Charlene’s sour cream raisin pie, that debate will finally be settled.
I had to look it up. RAGBRAI is The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.
I did a little more searching and found the the riders on RAGBRAI are totally into pie. There is pie at every stop on the ride and even online debate about what is the best pie.
You still sure about not wearing Spandex buffetbuster?
Are the pies only available to the riders (they should be)?
I can imagine buffetbuster and David Sanders standing in line wearing bike shorts to secure their share.
Thanks for posting that irisarbor. That sour cream raisin pie is a beauty!
Mom made 32 pies: 10 Sour Cream Raisin, 6 Chocolate Peanut Butter, 2 Watermelon, 4 Blueberry, 4 Strawberry Rhubarb, 2 Lemon Meringue, 2 Coconut Cream and 2 Custard. I only did 3 Caramel Apple Pecan pies (Mom’s recipe, of course).
We had a total of 110 pies and made $3000 for the Night to Shine Prom.
That’s tremendous! Congratulations to everyone involved! How long did it take your mon to bake 32 pies?
BTW, we are flying into Omaha in a few weeks. We are headed north and west into South Dakota, so we won’t be coming past Atlantic. Let me know if you and your mom would be willing to meet us in Omaha on Sunday, August 18.
My friend Doug is riding in this Bike rally/race.
I passed along this “pie intel” and this is what I received via text:

How the heck do I get a picture to copy in here these days?
Thank you for sharing this Elaine.

On Sunday, July 21st, Charlene Johnson is coming out of retirement and baking her specialty pies for RAGBRAI. 20,000 bikers are pedaling across Iowa for a week-long food and party fest. Her pies will be featured at the Atlantic First Church of Christ under the name “Heavenly Pies.”
Sour Cream Raisin, Peanut Butter Chocolate Explosion and Watermelon will be a few of the selections.
Cool!
And here I thought we received Charlene’s last ever sour cream raisin pie! So glad she is baking once again, so people can enjoy her world class pies.
I actually looked into flights into Omaha and Des Moines to see if there was any possible way to get there, but it is way too expensive.
Me in bike shorts…[woot]
Unfortunately I’m unable to get out there. How many pies will she have to bake for 20,000 bikers?
My consolation is that Hoosier Mama (Evanston branch) has their first blueberry pies today. That will be my lunch.

I haven’t made a pie in ages! My favorite is lemon meringue.
