the diner in tannersville is ok, not great. having lived briefly in the area many years ago, i recall that the snydersville diner had a pretty decent reputation, as did the nearby scotrun diner, although i have no idea if it still exists.
i make the I-80 run out of new york a couple of times a year, and, sadly, i still haven’t really found a place i really like…
Krisite, after dozens of fire company, church, and grange chicken and waffles dinners, I can tell you it’s not like chicken a la King. Picture an open faced hot turkey sandwich with a waffle instead of bread and chicken instead of turkey, slathered with regular chicken gravy. Most often the chicken is in large chunks instead of slices and combined with the gravy. As brookquarry mentioned, sometimes you get a casserole of chicken and gravy with the waffle on the side. The requisite side dish is pepper cabbage, a sort of ground cabbage and green pepper coleslaw with a vinegar and sugar dressing.

Check out the Good & Plenty Restaurant just outside of Lancaster near Intercourse. One of the finest meals I’ve ever eaten. Also, there’s a little place in Denver, PA called Dielasi’s (sp) that has the best steak sandwiches and subs. I HAVE flown from Dallas to Boston with a stop in Harrisburg just to drive over and eat some of their sandwishes.
in reply to Kristi, chicken and waffles in eastern Pennsylvania is typically served with the waffles as a base with the chicken- generally roast chicken served overtop, with or without gravy -sort of like an open-faced sandwich. Snydersville diner actually serves the waffles on a seperate plate from the chicken so that the patron can combine the two in any manner they wish.
My experience with East Coast ‘Chicken and Waffles’ was a stop at a SoulFood Place somewhere off of I-79 near Pittsburg,PA It was considered to be another sterotypical ‘Black Food’place. The owner told me he got the idea from a visit to a resturant in NYC owned by Gladys Knight (and the Pips), the R & B singer. It was Fried Chicken with a large waffle on the side (with the usual Waffle condiments. Pretty good combination I think. Hope that helps.
Hello, what exactly is chicken and waffles? My husband, who is from East Stroudsburg (and knows the PA culinary ropes) says that it is chicken ordered any way you like it, with waffles as a kind of bread. I pictured it as waffles covered in a chicken-ala-king style cream sauce. Please describe briefly your experiences with PA-Dutch style "chicken and waffles".
the diner in tannersville is called the Tanneresville Diner. Its not bad,but the place you really want to try id the Snydersville Dine, off Route 33’s Snydersville exit. If you can, try to go Sunday and have the chicken and waffles special. the roast beef(also on Sunday is very good as well. For desert, try the pies (all made on premises)
I’m sure you mean mile 299 at exit 45. There’s a diner right at the exit, used to be the 45 Diner, that I always stopped at on trips between Ohio and Connectict. They had pretty good food, and the coffee was excellent. There’s also a diner in Tannersville that’s even better, but I can’t remember the name. Of course, it’s the only diner in town.
