hmmmm….I work on the Hill, so I’ll have to research. But off the top of my head, some of the saloons along Pennsylvania Ave have decent lunch menus as do some of the saloons near MacPherson Square. I’ve heard The Best Sandwich Place on K St is good (but I haven’t been); there’s a few little delis on 18th and 19th that are mostly take out. Funny you mention, potpie…the Daily Grill, actually serves a decent potpie – some people think the Daily Grill is priced a bit high, but I dunno, because there’s usually a lunch special.
be sure to list any places you do find, and add it to the thread. I don’t get downtown for lunch too often, but it’s always good to know.
I just started working downtown in DC (near Farragut Square) and am looking for inexpensive lunches. Sure, I could grab a sandwich at Potbelly’s every day and eat it at my desk like a good working stiff but what’s the fun of that? In particular, anyone know where I can get chicken pot pie, to ward off this week’s chilly weather?
Ooh ooh, Naan and Beyond – yummy! Ate there two days already this week; it’s kitty-corner from my office. The food is really pretty unusual – basically tandoori chicken (or kebab), shrimp, or lamb in modern American clothing. So you can get a Caesar salad with any of the above, lightly dressed (ok so the croutons get a little soggy because the salad is premixed). Or you can get a naan wrap with any of the meats (or vegetarian), along with a dab of mayo and shredded cabbage. They’ll give you your choice of 3 chutneys to go with. The mango one is sweet; the mint and the third (which I forget) are quite hot. You can also get different biryanis, and they make their own masala-seasoned potato chips. I wasn’t wild about the rather bland, stodgy samosas, though.
Washington Deli (20th and K) for the best slice of pizza in DC (not really saying much but it’s pretty good). http://www.washingtondeli.com
That’s about it. If it still exists, there’s a pretty good place for pita sandwiches around there. I believe it was called Perfect Pita. That’s pretty much all I got. Unfortunately DC (with some exceptions) is a wasteland for trying to find good inexpensive food.

that’s great Wannabchef, you just listed a boat load of chains and a bunch of restaurants that aren’t within a reasonable walking distance from Farragut Square for lunch. [:(]and Ollie’s Trolley, is not on L St. It’s at the corner of 12th and E. So, usually, when giving advise, one has to dig deeper than google.
I’m just guessing DCTourist wanted more than just a google list, but some real life experience.
Just trying to help – sorry, he said he just moved there – I was trying to show that you can use the internet to help. I’m so sick of the nastiness – that’s the end. It seems some of you people live just to put others down. What a waste of a forum, are the negative comments really so necessary? WOW!
I always go with the assumption that if someone has enough Internet savy to find the Roadfood website, create an account, and post several times, that the person is fully aware of how to use search engines.
I don’t live to put people down, but it’s tiring when a person asks a question about non-chain places and someone else offers a list of more than 50% chains pulled from a search engine. It’s a lazy response. I don’t think there are people who frequent this site who don’t know what google is nor how to use the google search engine.
I’m sorry you feel so persecuted. If you had said you had actually been to DC and loved Cosi’s (which is a chain) I wouldn’t have said anything about your post. But you post from your town of Boise, ID a bunch of chain restaurants in Downtown, DC. It’s like you didn’t even read the original post.

They ruin everything!
Had a great Roadfood meal at Ben’s Chili Bowl (check the review under Restaurants) the last time I was downtown in DC. I don’t know how far it is from your workplace, but it’s very close to a Metro stop. Definitely worth the trip if your cardiologist will let you go!
Now we’re talkin’! Thanks for all the great suggestions; I shall bookmark this page or even print it out.
I did try the Breadline a few days ago and it looked great, although it was so cold that my fries, hot when I left, were only lukewarm when I got back to the office. Also, I didn’t care for the curried chicken salad but that’s probably just me. Should’ve gotten the chicken guacamole sandwich. And there’s a little Japanese/Korean place called Suki Asia on M street that has lots of nice stuff.
A little more about me, for clarification: I picked a lame username; I meant that I’m a tourist *from* DC in many other places (although I’m originally from New England). And I’m a woman not a man not that I gave any other clues [:)] . I didn’t actually just move to DC, only started a new job downtown (I live way up Conn. Ave. in DC and used to work in Bethesda and Rockville).

This entire thread as well as its original inquiry makes me long for the late, great…Sholl’s Cafeteria . . ..
Me too! Dined there often. Used to love Sholl’s crab cakes and its atmosphere when lived in DC and later nearby.
Knew it closed, but don’t know why. A proposed massive rent increase? The place was always packed, but its prices were always very low for its upmarket location.

Yeah, but they all drive about five times stupider, so it evens out in the end.
And I bet that they only have a fraction of the number of cars on the road as we do. Harrumph. [|)]
Well, you may pay less for chicken, but I bet your housing is affordable. So there!

Here’s maybe the only thing that’s suweeeet about living in Columbia, SC rather than a relatively great food town like DC. You can get basically the same thing at Sakura’s at Forest & Trenholm for $5.95. You get a ginger/peanut dressing topped salad, a bunch of teriyaki chicken, white rice or a California roll, shredded cabbage and pickled carrot with mayo and your usual wasabi and ginger slices. So yummy.
