Llechef: I have been all over the place, from Compton to Jamaica, and the only place I ever got a bit of attitude for being an "outsider" was at Stone’s…a Jamaican take-out shack behind a battery shop in South Central. But they still served me some of the best food around, and my friend says they just don’t like anybody at all there. The first time I went to New Orleans I was just tripping all over the place on the bus and no one was ever hostile…but alot of little old ladies with worried looks asked me if I was sure I was on the right bus.

Alright…I’ll be the first to admit that I have NEVER heard of this interestingly named restaurant. Label me a neophyte but I thought Dookey Chase referred to some U.S. Presidential historian’s nomenclature for the Clinton Presidency (i.e. the Kennedy’s "Camelot"). [;)][;)]

Mayhaw and Elise, since you have both been there you will find this story a little amusing: My then-husband and I found Dooky Chase underlined in our yellow pages in the hotel where we were staying in New Orleans. We called and got a reservation. We drove over past Louis Armstrong Park and found the place. Ah hem, this is where it gets delicate…..well my VERY White and Wasp Husband and his VERY White and Wasp Wife pull up in front of Dooky Chase only to find several n’eer do well and very elegantly dressed black couples strolling into the restaurant. There was a black door attendant. So Mrs. Wasp says to Mr. Wasp "let’s get the hell outta here" but fortunately Mr. Wasp had more guts than his wife……so he went into the restaurant to check out the situation (I slumped down in my seat and pretended to be dead before they shot me alive). My husband returns and says, "Hey, there are other white people in there, let’s go". Well, in we did go and I had one of the best meals of my life. We will be in NOLA in a couple of weeks and have two meal periods that are as yet unscheduled. I’m thinking Dooky Chase might be one of them. I won’t be scared this time around.

Dooky Chase is a fine choice and I second Elise T’s reccomendation for a cab,if you don’t know where you are going, but locals usually drive.

You also might want to consider the Praline Connection. Pretty much the same bill of fare. It is located on Frenchman St in the Fabourg Marigny and is an easy, interesting and safe walk from anywhere in the Quarter. They also have a great bakery attached to the restaurant and it is in the middle of a happening scene of nightclubs, bars, and restaurants.

It is also an elegant dining room, appropriate for clients. The fried chicken shouldn’t be missed. It’s not far from the Quarter, but feels far off the beaten track. I would recommend a taxi…it can be difficult to find, and I would have felt nervous parking and walking on such a dark street.

Dooky Chase is indeed a marvelous place for Creole meal. Last time we went, we just asked Leah to bring us what she thought we ought to have. The table was so full of Creole delights that people were staring and asking, "What did you order?"

I would love to go back to NO and eat there too ! [:D]
