May 1st promises to be a tasty night in Hartford. The Connecticut Forum is hosting a Food Fest at the Bushnell at 8pm. Participants in the evening’s panel discussion include chefs Jacques Pepin and Mario Batali, Gourmet editor Ruth Reichl, and yours truly, Jane & Michael Stern. The moderator of the show will be Calvin Trillin. For details and ticket information, check out the web site of the Connecticut Forum: http://www.ctforum.org/ . See you there!
Michael, can we have a recap of this? I’m 3000 miles away, but it sounded like a great thing. How many of those people are posting here under cute nicknames? hmmmm. Did you discuss lobster rolls, BBQ and pizza? Even though mario is an esteemed chef, I can see him sneaking into our favorite haunts incognito, and the others too. The image thing.

I’ll ask him, but I seem to remember hearing that, too. But I don’t think it was scooping ice cream behind the counter. I suspect he was there the way Martha Stewart was at K-Mart, to class up the joint. We shall see…
I don’t know about Pepin’s, but my first job in the U S after a visit to S E Asia with the Army, was with the HoJo’s on Rt 95 North of Boston. Gone now, it was a busy place in the 60’s. Between HoJo’s and the G I Bill I made it thru college!

Sounds like a great evening. I wish I could make the trip, fascinating panel. Just let Jacques, Ruth and Mario know that alongside froisgras, ris de veau and main courses involving vanilla, bologna waits its turn on the stage. It is patient, it is round, it’s ways of prep know no bound.
Have fun,
Sincerely,
