Rack, There’s a terrific place called Indigo Smoke on Bloomfield Ave. in Montclair, but it’s not a dive. It’s casual, great food, and definitely a fun place to eat out–jazz playing, red velvet cake on the dessert menu. It’s near Newark, but in a good neighborhood. Oh, and it’s byob.
There’s another barbecue spot called Smokey’s Great American on Orange Road in Montclair that’s totally a takeout place. It’s delicious, awesome sides, very humble. Bill, the owner/chef, is a sweetheart.
Helpp! Im still looking for someone who has been to Bloomfield Ave. BBQ in Newark. Thanks.
I think I found it! Bloomfield Ave BBQ in Newark. It is Brazilian and sounds great. Ever been there?

I am going to be in NJ in July. I heard about a fantastic barbeque on Bloomfield Ave. Probably Newark, maybe Bloomfield. I think that it is Latin. Great chicken. Maybe a storefront with mostly take out.
Maybe "Eder’s"? It’s in Newark, it’s "Latin" (Puerto Rican, to be specific) and mentions chicken on the storefront, as noted in this article.
