For that correct answer, you win an ancient unrestored Halolight by Sylvania and a years supply of Blue Dot flashbulbs.

Now, for your next problem. We have these department store statues dressed up to like Brad Pitt. Your job is to drop these hanging anvils on them. Oh, I forgot to tell you this. You will be blindfolded, handcuffed and gagged. Let’s see how much time Sylvania allows. (pause) 45 seconds. Ready… get set… GO!

Don Pardo is also one of the greatest announcers ever. I can’t believe I forgot him since I can impersonate him (poorly).

Bud Collyer did host the original TRUTH. A few rare color episodes have turned up. Two episodes were hosted by Mark Goodson himself. Goodson also subbed on the 90’s version. As I understand, when the version that became Garry Moore’s was in the planning stages, Collyer was in line to host.

I am now going to stray off topic a little. As we all know, the networks back in the day either did not record our classics or later erased the tapes. Here is what I know about some of our classics.

The Price is Right. Most daytime episodes of the Cullen version are gone. Some, but maybe not all primetime episodes survive. No color episodes from either NBC or ABC survive as color episodes. They survive as BW kinescopes. All Barker, James and Kennedy episodes survive.

Password. CBS black and white daytime episodes are believed wiped. All color episodes survive, sponsor tags edited out. BW primetime survive, but some episodes have not been released for syndication. The ABC version has less than ten episodes surviving. Both NBC versions are intact.

Hollywood Squares. The NBC (and its nighttime version) were thought to be wiped, but many episodes were found. These episodes were confirmed nighttime, but some daytime episodes may have survived. All later versions are intact.

The Joker’s Wild. It was thought the CBS version was wiped, but the tapes turned up. The 77-96 version is intact, as well as that horrid 90’s revival.

Match Game. All but about nine episodes and the pilot of the NBC version are gone. The CBS and PM version, as well as its successors survive.

Beat the Clock. It is unknown if the first season survives. Many CBS nighttime episodes survive. The status of the ABC daytime version is not known. All its successors survive.

Concentration. The NBC (Hugh Downs, Bob Clayton) version is all but gone. The syndicated version with Jack Narz is unknown. Classic Concentration survives, but NBC has not syndicated it or authorized a new version.

To Tell the Truth. The CBS primetime version is belived to be mostly intact. It’s possible that BW daytime episodes were wiped. Other than a few color episodes, it is not really known how much of the daytime version survived. It is believed the first season of the Garry Moore version is gone. The rest of the series survives. I do believe the early 80’s version (Robin Ward) is intact. The NBC version is intact. I would presume the O’Hurley version is also intact.

    Yes!

It was indeed Sylvania, the makers of Blue Dot Flashbulbs ("Blue Dot for sure shot" was the slogan), as well as the Halo Light TV.

The TV had a dim lighted area surrounding the picture tube, and the theory was that this was more gentle to the eyes. Good theory, no reality to the claim.

Okay, Ruby–Here is your trivia question of the day:

Who was the sponsor of Beat the Clock?

The sponsor must have made flash bulbs because I remember Bud taking photos right at the TV camera with one of those cameras with the shiny metal shield around the bulb. At Christmastime, they’d show a snapshot of happy kids around a Christmas tree opening their presents and then show the same scenario as a darker shot where you could hardly make out the figures that was taken with some inferior flash bulb.

But for the life of me, I can’t remember what company it was.

I’m thinking it was Sylvania. The light bulb clue jogged my rusty memory. pb

When I was in high school, I used to watch Alex Trebek host a local high school college bowl type show called "Reach For the Top" on a Toronto station.

    And I thought I was old[:p]

Jim Peck’s best show was "The Big Showdown", a challenging Q&A game that only
got a 6-month run on ABC in 1974-1975 (along with "The Money Maze", hosted by
Nick Clooney, the father of George).

I know the BTC sponsor (it was on their home game), but will not reveal it.

Geoff Edwards was in charge of another wild Chuck Barris production, Treasure
Hunt, with the famed security guard Emile Autori (sp). He also hosted Jackpot!
and a revival of Chain Reaction (taped in Montreal).

And this post is a production of Merv Griffin Enterprises, distributed by
    King World. [:0]

    Time to update the list.

    Another vote to Wink Martindale.

Chuck Barris was perfect on The Gong Show. Did anyone see the pilot with John Barbour?

Bob Eubanks is also very good.

Jim Peck should get an honorable mention. He did a great job subbing for Jack Barry on Joker. Unfortunately, he was given mostly garbage to host.

Did anyone mention Geoff Edwards? He had a few good shows, but nothing long running.

Dennis James was good back in the day. This is nothing against him. There are two episodes of his TPIR on a very popular video sharing site. One episode is the sixth of the noghttime series. A female contestant (presumed to be roughly in her 40’s) won her showcase and pricing game. James revealed her total and told her something like she should be a happy little girl. That just bothered me. Unfortunately, little of Dennis James video survives or has been released. I give him a vote.

    Best announcers:

    Johnny Olsen
    Gene Wood
    Rod Roddy
    Rich Fields
    Jay Stewart
    Johnny Gilbert
    Charlie O’Donnel
    Bern Bennet
    Hal Simms

This post has been a Mark Goodson Bill Todman production. This is Big Dave speaking. Prizes mentioned were furnished and/or paid for by the suppliers of the products or services mentioned in this post.

Jan Murray, from Treasure Hunt! [:o)]

Jan was very personable and was a natural comic, as well. I believe that he also hosted Feather Your Nest. If you have never heard of these shows, it just means that you weren’t watching TV back in the early-mid ’50s!

I used to love the show "What’s my line?", and was glad when it came back on air recently (too short lived, though)
I thought John O’Hurley was entertaining as the host for the new version. Also like him on Family Feud nowadays, but I don’t really like that show too much.

I like Jeopardy (and agree about Alex Trebek).
I love when there’s categories like state capitals, or food & spirits, but hate those "ancient literature" type of categories.

I used to also really like the Newlywed Game (and Bob Eubanks, with all his "making whoopie" talk) and the good ‘ol Dating Game (Jim Lang,I believe was host of that). Those shows seemed so risque for their time, did’nt they?!?
