I’m traveling to these two towns in August. Does anyone have any favorites in either? Most any kind of chow is ok, except bbq, I don’t eat Q on the road.
    Thanks!

I always hit the  Roanoke Weiner Stand in downtown Roanoke.  Great, old place.  I’ve been to Awful Arthur’s Seafood in downtown as well.  Kind of a young, funky place.    I’d recommend both places.

There’s a relatively large West Virginia crafts center in Beckley called Tamarack that I’ve been told serves its share of local and regional foods.  Haven’t eaten there myself, but someone I generally trust found it to be pretty satisfying.

The food services at Tamarack are operated by The Greenbrier.  I have not eaten there, but my folks have… they say it’s been very good.  It’s more of a cafeteria style concept.

Wow… Greenbrier, I’m really quite shocked to hear that.  I’ll have to make the side trip next time I’m down that way.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the Texas Tavern is a definite. Fork in the Ally looks interesting also.

In Roanoke, I love the Texas Tavern for slaw dogs and cheesy westerns.  Great atmosphere in this tiny downtown restaurant.

The Roanoker has outstanding breakfast.  Fork in the Alley has good road food for lunch and dinner.  They serve good pizza, burgers, sandwiches and other entrees.  Awful Arthur’s has good seafood for lunch and dinner.  Hollywood Restaurant has good salads, soups, burgers and sandwiches for lunch and dinner. Texas Tavern is a good joint for burgers.

The food at Tamarack is pretty good.  There is a  steak restaurant called Char in Beckley but I’ve never been there.

I can tell you a lot about Fayetteville which is 15 miles north of Beckley on Hwy 19.
Great buffet in an open air setting at Smokey’s on the Gorge at Class VI River Runners.  Check them out on line.

Great breakfast and lunch at the Cathedral Cafe in Fayetteville.  Excellent food.
Great dinners can be had at the Sedona Grille on Hwy 16 jsut outside of Fayetteville as well as Gumbo’s which has about everything you could get at a restaurant on the French Quarter.

Another great place is Pies and Pints in downtown Fayetteville.  Great selection of pizza which are very good and a large assortment of beers.

If you are looking for something good (not great) and quick in Beckley, check out the King Tut Drive-In.
