I’ve only been to Spoon’s once, but like WJ, I also found the food to be mediocre at best

I thought BB King was only OK as well

I have heard good things about Bob Bob Gibson’s, but have not been there to confirm

I recently visited Bill Spoon’s in February. They serve eastern style NC BBQ (in western NC)  which is quite different compared to other regional  BBQ styles that you might be used to.
I thought Bill Spoon’s was mediocre, I’ve had better. But you’re likely not to find that style of bbq in the Charlotte region elsewhere.

anb5, I think http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Reviews/5349/bill-spoons-barbecue Bill Spoon’s on South Blvd. is a great place.  And if you drive 20 minutes south (depending on where you are in Charlotte), http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurant/Reviews/5229/521-bbq-grill 521 BBQ is another great one.  Both have been reviewed by Michael Stern and myself.  Spoon’s doesn’t normally keep dinner hours, but 521 does — call ahead, by all means!  [8D]  Chris

We had Bill Spoon’s last year and thought it was fantastic.  I love their mustard slaw.

Same here. The only disappointment, and it was a minor one, is that the hushpuppies didn’t have the slight hint of sweetness and onion that, IMO, perfect pups should. They did, however, have a really good crust, nice and crunchy.

McCoy’s Smokehouse and Saloon is a lot of fun.  They have some parties there but the food is excellent.  Old Hickory House is nice also.
