Although  my son enjoys Pierces for barbeque, I do not care for that place at all.  The only thing that I ate there that I really liked were sweet potato fries.  I went two times because rest of family wanted to stop there.

I find Marvelous Market to be equally as good in the sandwich department, but much less expensive.

Wagshal’s grocery items are pricey too. There’s other local markets in NW DC that have good quality foods with out the high price tag. Same with the wine.

Rent must be high in that little shopping center tucked between AU Park and Spring Hill Valley neighborhoods – two extremely affluent neighborhoods.

If your daughter picks AU Law, I’ll let her in on some of those options.

But, you’ll get no complaints from me on Wagshal’s quality. I used to stop there on occasion when trying to get to Bethesda for evening rehearsals with the National Philharmonic Orchestra Chorale when I lived in Glover Park, before the Music Center at Strathmore was built.

When I lived on that side of town, my Mom always wanted to make a trip to Crate and Barrel across the street from that shopping center. There was no Crate and Barrel in Syracuse, so she could buy some stuff and save on the shipping. It’s still one of her favorite stores.

    Delighted you enjoyed Wagshal’s.

So — where does your daughter want to go to law school after visiting them all?

    DocChuck:
Sir, I stand corrected.  The proper term is “accepted”.
    Thanks,

WOW — admitted to ‘several law schools’.

As a former (retired) professor, I find that VERY impressive.  But, perhaps you meant to say, ‘accepted’ by several law schools (the law schools are VERY competitive at this time).

Whatever.  As a long-time resident of the area, and as a visiting professor at Johns Hopkins University, I would suggest that you simply swing over to Baltimore and enjoy some Faidley’s crab cakes.

You will NOT regret the culinary experience.

She’s waiting to hear from W&M.  If that doesn’t work out it looks like Wake Forest.  Her choice also depends on what day it is, weather conditions and the phase of the moon.

Well, we got back and we ate very well thanks to you folks.  We tried the crap cakes at Faidley’s, and they have ruined us for all time.  We will never have any better!  In Washington we had a sandwich at Wagshal’s.  That place brought back fond memories of my childhood in NJ.  In Williamsburg we decided to satisfy our BBQ craving and ate at Pierces Pit.  It was the only disappointing meal of the trip.  I suppose that after eating Carolina Q for decades, Tidewater Q just doesn’t stack up.  We also had a sandwich at the Cheese Shop in Williamsburg, and was pleasantly surprised.  Try the Virginia ham.  We decided to eat a steak in a more upscale place in Winston-Salem, and went to the Tavern Inn as suggested.  Great service and food.  Final score, 4 outstanding meals, and one so-so meal.
Thanks to everyone who posted.  Y’all have never failed me yet.

    Faidley’s crab cakes.

I won’t quibble at all with the choice of Faidley’s, but another spot in Baltimore that hasn’t been mentioned is Attman’s for yummy Kosher delifood:  http://www.attmansdeli.com http://www.attmansdeli.com/

I’m betting the corned beef sandwiches aren’t still $.25 like they were when I was a student in Baltimore, though.

I went to med school at Duke, nearby (to Wake Forest) and the decision was based almost entirely on weather and azalea blossoms.  When I was doing my campus tours, the alternatives were places like Penn and Columbia where it was still winter with piles of nasty dirty snow everywhere.  In Durham, the sun was shining, it was warm, the azaleas in Duke Gardens were beginning to bloom and most of the student body was out tossing frisbees.

Duke Gardens on the campus of Duke University (which is quite large but has gorgeous little spots like this everywhere).

    I’d recommend Wagshal’s Deli, http://wagshals.com http://wagshals.com/

[style=”color: #008000;”]I finally made it here and for lunch this afternoon. Outstanding! Had a (requested) lean hot pastrami on rye. Very, very good. Sliced paper thin and wonderfully prepared. I only wish I had first seen the prepared hot food bar in this small, wooden floor delicatessen located in D.C.’s Spring Valley section as it featured a spectrum of delicious-looking offerings including turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc.[/style]
