Sanders’ Bumpy Cake Ice Cream is still sold in half gallons at most Detroit area grocery stores as a co-branded item through Stroh’s ice cream. We get some every time we visit the Motor City on biz. in fact we will be there later this week and are looking forward to a big bowlful at the end of the day.
Well I believe the last location to close in the city of Detroit was on Gratiot ave. Iy naturally stayed open so long because it was next to a shopping strip with a Montgomery Wards. However, it seems once Montgomery Wards left, Sander’s left behind it. the building’s was formerly by our first and only Kroger on pfent st next to a Charter One bank. You can see the sign faded on the back of the building and can hardly see the faded letter in the front of the building that read Sander’s Ice Cream. Now they opened one in Grosse Pointe Park, just on the outskirts of Detroit on Kercheaval st. It shouldn’t be too long til they decide to move into downtown Detroit, Ben and Jerry’s did
Anyone Remember Sander’s Ice Cream?
