For anyone who cares, I believe the original Fat Mike’s location was actually where the KFC or Taco Bell is situated. The Callahan’s / Cubby’s location is where the Dairy Queen was before they left due to not being able to renew the lease for the land.
Fondly remember Fat Mikes, I even remember it as far back as when Rt. 17 was only a two lane highway. The original stand was right next to the Hasbrook Heights football field. It was rather small.
They had a woman who worked there who used to yell out orders from the counter- Burgerrrrrrs. Great memories.
Hey! I resemble this thread…[:D]
I believe that the progression was Fat Mike’s – to Texas Wieners (Home of the Texas Lunch) – to Cubby’s – to Callahan’s – to…as of this week…an empty building.
Yeah I remeber Fat Mike’s I went there as a child. In fat my parents’ first date was there.
I grew up in Fair Lawn and remember all those places[:D]
I would kill, "or just about", for a Fat Mikes Dog. They were some of the best around. Does anyone remember how good the steak sandwiches were?God, I miss Jersey food…[:p]
FAT MIKE’S was the BEST hot dog stand EVER! I have searched high and low since it closed looking for a chili dog to rival Fat Mike’s. Anybody remember the newspaper article hanging on the wall featuring Fat Mike driving a Rolls Royce at his beach house in Florida because of the $$$ he made from that stand on 17? The chili Dogs were the best – washed down with the birch beer. Just saw a documentary on PBS about hot dog stands across the US – just made me long for Fat Mike’s. I wish I had that chili recipe! Anyone?
I remember going to Fat Mike’s with my pop. If it’s the place that had all autographed pictures of celebrity’s on the wall. I could remember one of WABC Radio DJ Dan Ingram(I believe). My dad told me they had the best hot dogs around and he was correct. This is going back quite a few years and I remember we had a good time of sharing some dogs. Tell you the truth; 17 south was loaded back in the 70’s and 80’s with a lot of food places. Even the Paramus Park Mall had a food court that was worth talking about back then…
Yes, I fondly remember Fat Mike’s on 17. Many of the people I grew up with in Fair Lawn went there. We miss it. Johnny & Hanges moved from Paterson to Fair Lawn (Maple Ave off of 208). Anyone remember that one?
I thought Fat Mikes was great as well,I think they sold to Cubby’s
in the 90’s,then Cubby’s sold to Callaghan’s,same building on 17 south,Hasbrouck Heights,NJ,not to far from Hanks’s Frank’s on 46 east.
yes we do and we are in fact looking for his famous chili recipe. Any ideas on how to get it???
Am I the only one who went to Fat Mike’s in the 70’s and 80’s?
The best chili dogs in the world. Sabretts with mustard, chili and raw onions….He started with a hot dog stand at the Hasbrouck Heights high schoool football field. Then he made his famous (ask Bill Cosby) roadside stand on route 17 south in the Heights. If you didn’t eat at least 3 or 4 it wasn’t worth going.
His chili cheeseburgers were also among the greatest treats of all time.
Before Devil hockey games in the early 90’s my 2 boys and I would invade Fatso’s for chili dogs and chilburgers.
Fatso died in the 70’s but his family carried on until the early 90’s.
A Taco Bell now stands on that hallowed ground of Fat Mike’s. While I love Taco Bell NOTHING will ever replace FAT MIKE’S.
Believe me, as a hot dog lover, I have never been satisfied since Fatso left this area.
