King, I remember the Alton comment you mention. He may have had a real good point.

I agree with Alton Brown a few weeks back, CAN WE GET RID OF THEM ALL AND START OVER!!!
citylite9,JAG,as the man in the cooking contest used it,referred to his initals, Joshua something or another.
Militarily, JAG is short for Judge Advocate General.
Ole Rouxdog
For the sake of propriety, I may have to do my research online, but I don’t have any association with JAG other than I think it has a military meaning and was once an action-TV show.
I’ve never been accused of being a Polyanna, and I never doubted producers play to entertainment value on reality shows. (Do you really HAVE to cry that much? Yulk. Get a grip.) However, I have to admit I was surprised to hear from Al the Mayor "we heard about this weeks ago." Did everybody know but me? Won’t the FN suffer for letting such a charade go on — the war is controversial but the men and women serving are certainly not and I tend to think America will be up in arms (no pun intended). As much as I don’t usually care about personal bios, I’m interested in the nature of Jag’s discharge. Beyond the military thing and the culinary thing, I also take offense as an ornery and proud New Yorker — isn’t he from Carolina?
Did he honestly have the "cooking chops" the judges kept talking about? I think 55 ingredients tend to overwhelm a dish.
Remember when he cried "painful memory" when he had to cook for the military?
No doubt reality shows are fixed. I figure we are getting close to a Quiz Show moment when the fraud of the genre will be exposed and people will abandon the format.
Last week on Hell’s Kitchen was another moment of how these shows are fixed. The Men’s team clearly won the challenge, but Gordon selected the women as winners. The prize was a photo shoot with Gordon and make over. You knew Gordon wasn’t go have a photo shoot and make-over with a bunch of guys.
Anyway…I digress. I voted for Amy. I don’t really like either of them, but I think Amy is more like the old FN. I find Rory, like a lot of the current FN stars, to be phony and suffering from an inflated sense of self-importance. She is not as hot as she thinks she is.
The nickname of ‘Jag’ is quite apropos. He’s a complete and utter one.
Not sure about the rest of the country, but in/around the Midwest, the term ‘jag’ isn’t exactly one of affection. [:p]
citylite9, the FN execs, are guilty of phoniness. I have NEVER watched any of the "reality" shows which seem to be popularily addictive. They raked me in on this one, never again!
Thank you for your kind comment regarding our veterans.
Ole Rouxdog
My vote is for Amy even though I like Rory too — at least the shows I am able to watch on the FN (yup, I’m still Tivo-less) seem very tipped toward junk-diner-greasy-chili-fried throwdowns — and I like to be challenged to learn a little more than I can already do — I am so old I miss Julia and Graham and the snobbier the better!
In response to veteran’s post about his disgust with JAG, let me say this: I know I can’t imagine the depths from which your feelings come. Even though my politics may be close to opposite of yours, I share your outrage and your conclusion. It seemed so obvious that JAG had lots of suspicious psychological stuff going on (that I doubt either the Marines or a good culinary school would want to keep around for long; I wondered how that undisciplined temper fared in Afghanistan) –so I can’t say the lying surprised me — but I can’t believe the FN execs didn’t weed it out much sooner.
Well, last night after JAG’s admission to lying about his military service, I chose to comment regarding my vote between Amy and Rory. I wanted to "sleep" on the JAG thing. Well I’ve slept. I find his lying to be totally disgusting and damn near unforgivable! I’m a 64 year old veteran, a member of the American Legion and serve as Post Commander. Most importantly, it’s been my privalege/responsibility to honor fellow veterans during burial services. Recently, our Post helped lay to rest a 20 year old soldier who gave his life while serving in Iraq. Our part of honoring this young man was a 21 gun salute and taps.
JAG, find a dark hole and crawl in it.
Ole Rouxdog
Welcome to ‘reality show’ standard operating procedure. It’s total baloney.
citylite9/robearjr: my new favorite bumper sticker is ‘I’m okay with straight people so long as they act gay in public’
WOW. He actually lied about where he served. I think that is actually disgusting. I wouldn’t care so much about the culinary school, and not graduating (did he go at all?) because I know amazing cook who haven’t gone, but the whole service thing really gives me the creeps.
Thanks for answering though!

——————————————————————————–
Jag lied, both about graduating from culinary school and serving in Afghanistan.
I think he was really disingenuous in his little interview, he wouldn’t really come clean, and when he said he didn’t mean to ride on the coattails of his ‘brothers’ who really did serve in Afghanistan, I wanted to smack him (I don’t have his exact words, but something to that effect). That’s EXACTLY what he was doing, and he deserved to go down.
What makes me even sicker is how Food Network decided to deliver this news. We heard about it weeks ago, and they KNEW and even if they didn’t discover it until after tonight’s show was filmed (weeks or months ago), it’s been common knowledge and they went ahead with it all anyway. Talk about exploitation. They used it for drama. This is why I hate so-called reality shows. They’re bullcrap. They have nothing to do with real life, it’s staged, it’s phoney, and I’m sorry I got sucked into it. I’m just glad I’ve never watched American Idol, or Bachelor, or Donald Trump or Survivor or any of the rest of that stupid genre. I learned my lesson with this one.
End of rant.
So I seemed to miss why Jag left the show. I take 3 minutes out to make tea and that’s what happens. [:I] Can someone tell me what happened? Thanks
Man oh man I love this thread…..if only it didn’t start with a big pic of RR [xx(]
My vote goes to Rory – not much of a vote, but heck – look at the others!\[:(]
Well friends, we have the opportunity to vote for either Amy or Rory to become the next food network star. I like both of them and believe each have a refreshing look to add. I’ve already voted for RORY. Reason being, I believe Rory will bring a different and interesting perspective view of food. I wish all the contestants well.
