It was posted a couple of days ago on Hot Dog Nation that A&H will be available at Trader Joe’s nationwide!!! including eventually, their natural casing products.
Folks over there rave about it being the best kosher hot dog. I’ve never had them, not sure I’d even heard of them, and haven’t been to TJ’s in months.
So I went looking around and found they’re already carried at 2 local HEB’s that have Kosher departments. I headed right over to one but they were sold out.
HEB has started carrying Martin’s potato bread and is supposedly set to start carrying the rolls, too. I’ve tried the bread and I love it, works good as a hot dog bun, but I haven’t seen the rolls on the shelves yet. I hope it’s selling well.
I took a look around to see what else I could find might have changed on the local weenie front and came across Hofmann’s Snappies listed on the Aldi website! I’ve never seen them here, although local Aldi’s do carry a couple of Texas made sausages and I’ve picked up some pretty good natural casing franks during their Deutsche Kuche week promotions, supposed imported from Germany. I’ll be looking for them, but I suspect the Hofmann’s may be a regional offering.
I wrote about Abeles & Heymann hot dogs here on Roadfood a number of years ago, but it appears that thread did not survive the conversion.
They are definitely a high quality meat product. Kosher beef, not mystery meat. They are easy to find in the NYC Metro area after A&H started producing them again in their own plant about 2007. So, the only consideration is if you like their spice blend better than that of other hot dogs you are presently buying. I happen to like the non-kosher Sabrett more myself, but buy A&H for a change. So having Trader Joe’s distribute them nationally is a good thing for hot dog lovers.
Speaking of Aldi, they seem to be distributing a lot of products lately from high quality sausage producers. They are currently selling natural casing “New York style” Dietz and Watson hot dogs (made in Philadelphia). About “Deutsche Kuche” week, you have to be real careful. They has two round seals on their Deutsche Kuche line of German foods. Some of them say “Imported from Germany”. Some say “Inspired by Germany” (read: Made in USA or Canada). There is one manufacturer of Nürnberg bratwurst, HoWe Wurstwaren, that jumped through the hurdles to get their products into the USA. They are sold at both Aldi and Lidl as private label, but they have also shown up at Costco under their own name. The way to spot them is by the German equivalent of the USDA inspection label. You will find the number EV-717 on packages of their product. They apparently think their products are good enough to sell at retail at the factory, as well as serve in a cafe (carry-out only right now due to Covid19):
Have you noticed the rotgut sausage plants are all surrounded by barbed wire fences?

Thanks, David NYC. It’ll be next week at least before I make another run (or order curbside) to HEB. I have no plans right now to make the trek to a TJ’s, which is a lot farther. Looking forward to getting my hands on some A&H.
I had discovered soon after Aldi came to town that some of their DK products are made in the USA but had forgotten about the labels. I’ve read somewhere most of Aldi’s Parklane or Parkview (?) sausages are made for them in Wisconsin – Saum(s) – can’t recall if that’s a town or a company.
I can’t find any notes I’ve made about the Aldi wieners – either forgot to make notes or they weren’t branded as DK. I find a Bavarian brand wieners on a listing of DK products online. I’m pretty sure I’ve had 2 different products and one had Black Forest in the name, but I can’t find anything in my notes.
I can get D&W here at Randall’s (Safeway) – New York Deli style beef and Black Forest pork and beef. Both good, both NC, I tend to like the p&B better.
Used to be able to get NC Sabrett’s but can only find skinless now; same for Nathan’s NC (also at Randall’s).
I hope A&H makes it to PHX. I’ll check soon.
BTW, Aldi’s is coming here too.
