A brief Central Wisconsin trip report – summer 6
For those few who may be interested, here’s a brief report of what we found during our annual pilgrimage to Neshkoro, WI, around 25 miles west of Oshkosh:
We hit 3 places: Nappy’s in downtown Neshkoro for the Wednesday nite all you can eat fried chicken. Excellent northern-fried chicken, crispy relatively mild breading, cooked fairly dark and just a bit greasy throughout. Creamy slaw and choice of french or steak fries or baked along with cracker basket and relish tray. No salad bar, that’s only open for Friday fish fry. Tab for 2 adults and kid including 2 chicken dinners (kid cheated), 2 beers, 1 mixed drink, and a milk was around $22 – ironically just less than dinner at Golden Corral. The waitress made us an offer we couldn’t refuse on seconds of chicken, perhaps because there were very few customers. There seemed to be very few people around during our whole trip. Anyhow, high marks to Nappy’s but it is a very country style place, so not for those who are fussy about sparkling clean.
Next, Timbers north of Montello on WI 22 for Friday fish fry. A favorite fish fry place for those who don’t choose the fish fry. Unremarkable fried haddock, fries or potato pancakes, slaw for $8.99. Lots of other choices that our companions seemed to enjoy. Crowded and popular with the younger Chicago set.
Finally, KK’s in Poysippi for their Sunday nite seafood buffet. Smallish salad bar followed by fried shrimp, haddock, cod, perch, smelt, walleye along with potatoes and bread for $12.99. Not huge but they put a lot of effort into it; each fish had a different breading or batter treatment. More expensive than the average fish fry but we enjoyed it very much and would certainly head back. Fair crowd despite the brat and beer fund raiser at the Poysippi park and fireworks in nearby towns. KK’s has a rotating selection of Sunday nite buffets, next week was to be BBQ ribs. They advertise in the local Resorter shopper.
Actually, the Resorter and similar shoppers are filled with ads for delicious-sounding restaurant specials. I noted at least one all-you-can-eat in the area every nite except Mondays, from spaghetti & meatballs to burgers & brats to prime rib. Wish we could have explored a bit more.
Groceries and Cheese Factories
Reetz’s in Neshkoro still has some of the tastiest brats and summer sausage in the area. They also have a store in Poysippi.
Spring Lake Store is great for bulk foods, but the help is very lacking in product knowledge. May have to look up unfamiliar ingredients on the net before buying. Highlight in late June is bags of shelled fresh peas.
Sentry Foods, Berlin, like all Sentries, no longer carries Crestwood bakery. Sad news for kringle and Dresden stollen lovers.
3 cheese factories on this trip: Old Country Cheese in Cashton’s Amish country. Very nice fellow working the store, but can’t particularly recommend. Curds were oddly crumbled into little tiny pieces and the muenster was too salty.
Cedar Grove in Plain has carried its no BGH policy into becoming a bit trendy in cheese choices plus considerably more expensive than in the good ol’ days. Still, excellent curds, dill cheese, and tomato basil cheese flavored with just tomatoes and basil, no extras.
Walnut Creek just north of Berlin on WI 21 is a relatively new factory from the Union Star folks. Big enticement there is fresh cheddar. If you get it the day it’s packed, it’s like sliceable cheese curds, squeak and all. Curds also excellent as was string cheese. Lots of rarely seen flavors such as walnut jack. If you go there is a flex-fuel vehicle, be sure to stop at the ethanol plant across the road. E85 was $1.99/gal there when regular was $2.99 in Berlin.
So food-wise, that was the trip. Wish we could have stayed longer and ate more.
