CK, sorry you didn’t place but that gumbo looks delish! You keep educating folks that things other than seafood make good eats too 🙂
The tenth annual gumbo cookoff is just around the corner
3rd weekend in Feb 2008!
You know I would have been there in a minute!

Bravo my fellow Gumbomaniac! You are indeed a winner[:o)][8D][:D]!!!
CajunKing: Very nice job and I am impressed. I appreciate the fact that you compete, enjoy and fish. You did well.
Thanks for the photos.

I would let it go a minute or so before stirring, but most of the time stirring, and laughing at my father while he cut the onions up. I told him I was going to get even with him, so I made him chop up the onions.
As far as the categories, there were 2. Professional & Non-Professional. Which is better than when we first started doing this, everyone for themselves.
So you were competing against restaurants and professional cooks [:(] So guess who took the top spots the first 5 years.
Then they decided to have 2 categories, and things have went much better each year.
As far as all seafood winning, MB is a small fishing town, right on the coast, so that tends to sway the judges.
I do get more comments about having no seafood, and people search out the non seafood entries.
I shouldn’t complain to much, I avoided a major ice storm, cooked 7 gallons of my best gumbo ever, sold out of those 7 gallons in less than 2 hours, got to see many friends and made some new ones, made this little boy named luke’s day by giving him about 30 strands of beads to wear, had fun in doing all of the above.
Wow! That is some seriously good looking food! It must have been a lot of fun. Now I’m kicking my self for not shooting down to Mexico Beach, looks like you all had a good time.
All seafood won?
I would think they would have separate categories for seafood, yaya and Z’herbes! Unfair!
So, did you really stir that rouz CONSTANTLY, or how long can you get away with not stirring?
Real nice layout there! Makes one wish they where there! Plus having freinds and family along sounds like a riot! Now to figure out what to do with this Gumbo craving I’m having right now… Thanks CK.. Nice job there, hopefully you’ll take top honors next year..
What a nice write up and excellent pics..
Looks like everyone had fun there…..
I too thank you for the time & effort of your road food post. BTW, I am not a seafood fan and would much rather your type gumbo.
yes for now we are leaving at 5am in the morning.
Sorry to have missed you.
Nothing wrong with that! Are you still down on the coast?
Thanks for the great pictures and report. I would love to go see a competition like this. Thanks for the recipe. My Ex is from Louisiana so I have had quite a few versions of gumbo but your recipe looks really different. I will try it!
Shhhhh, Don’t tell anyone but the okra was Piggly Wiggly brand frozen cut okra. [;)]
It was still bright green because I had just added it to the pot. They did have fresh okra in the produce dept, but it was $$$$$ [V].
