Ugly Roll Sushi
Review by: Roadfood Team
Hidden as it is in a nondescript strip mall in suburban West LA, you would most likely drive right by Ugly Roll Sushi without even realizing that it’s there.
This sushi place is a sushi roll restaurant offering basic rolls, specialty rolls, and rolls that are downright “ugly”. In fact, the restaurant’s trademark specialty roll is called the “Ugly Roll.” The space itself is small, and although there are a few tables, the restaurant’s business appears to be primarily takeout.
What should I eat at Ugly Roll Sushi?
You can order traditional sushi here, but that’s not what you want. The menu is limited, and does offer a few daily specials. The best bargain on the menu is the Ugly Combo. The combo includes your choice of two basic sushi rolls, and a side of shrimp tempura. For a couple of dollars more, you can substitute a basic roll for one of their specialty rolls. I chose the shrimp tempura roll, a basic California roll topped with tempura shrimp.
A roll not to be missed
The standout, however, is the Volcano Roll a baked California roll topped with scallops. The spicy mayonnaise and sweet chili sauce that covers this specialty roll provides harmonious balance. The shrimp and vegetable tempura that accompanies the combo is surprisingly light and crispy. Only issue is the watery sauce for dipping doesn’t go well with the tempura, but this is my only complaint.
For inexpensive sushi rolls that won’t break the bank, Ugly Roll Sushi fits the bill.
