This is the original Tom Wahl’s (there are several in the Rochester area), specializing in terrific burgers. Specialty of the house, the Wahlburger, is ground steak covered by a slice of grilled ham, Swiss cheese, tomato, and Wahl’s own special sauce. To drink: handcrafted root beer.

Tom Wahl’s time-honored slogan continues to be “A Family Tradition Since 1955.” And this is for good reason. Nine Tom Wahl’s restaurants are located in the greater Rochester area, but the original gem is located in the charming town of Avon, New York. The Avon location has recently undergone an expansion of their dining room, and a meal at Tom Wahl’s is like a step back in time. Customers are treated to a fifties-style malt shop atmosphere, complete with retro tiles, booths, posters and decor, and an authentic old-time jukebox.

What to eat at Tom Wahl’s

While Tom Wahl’s is mainly a burger and ice cream joint, their hamburgers are unmatched in taste and quality. One thing to keep in mind: a Tom Wahl’s burger is known as a “ground steak sandwich.” It’s a fitting label. The ground steak patties are pressed and then cooked to medium perfection: juicy, flavorful, and wider than the toasted buns they’re served on. A favorite is the “Wahlburger,” which is ground steak with melted Swiss cheese, grilled smoked ham, lettuce, and special sauce, served on a seeded bun. It’s a smokey, beefy feast in itself, and the flavors of the ingredients come together perfectly. A fixings bar with tomatoes, onions, and both dill and bread and butter pickles provides patrons with more ways to customize their ground steak delights.

Another famous item on the menu is Tom Wahl’s homemade, handcrafted root beer, served in a frosted mug. The Avon location recently added a fountain, where patrons can repeatedly get their fix of delicious root beer, along with other soft drink favorites. Their root beer is wonderfully refreshing, with a sweet and smooth finish. Soft serve ice cream can be added to the mug, for a stellar root beer float.
