The New White Steamer

Slider alert! The New White Steamer brings thin, wide onion burgers with nicely charred edges to small-town Indiana. Tenderloins, chicken, and fried fish also are available, as are French fries; but it’s double burgers and double cheeseburgers that are the menu’s highlights. Note that breakfast is served starting at 5am.

The New White Steamer sits in the middle of downtown Washington, Indiana. It’s the type of place that town regulars visit on a frequent basis. In fact, my wife and I, just passing through town, appeared to be the only people there who weren’t well known by the friendly wait staff.

What to eat at The New White Steamer

After grabbing two seats at the counter, my wife ordered a breakfast of eggs, German fries, which are basically home fries with onions, and biscuits with gravy. I had an absolutely classic double cheeseburger. Each patty was very thin and wide, with the edges having a nice char. There were fried onions cooked into the patties and pickles on top. With a little salt and pepper added, this was one of the better burgers I’ve enjoyed over the years.
