The Canteen at Oceanpoint Ranch

Review by: Lori Rice

The Canteen at Oceanpoint Ranch in Cambria, California, sits just off Highway 1, a short walk from the beach. The interior offers a quirky mix of cafe-meets-rustic-lodge while the menu features a list of creative breakfast options with a touch of classic flavor.

Take a minute to review the beautifully handwritten menu that hangs from the wall on a large spool of brown paper before you step up to the counter to place your order. You can’t go wrong with any choice, but there are few I strongly recommend.

The Daybreak Sammie will please breakfast sandwich lovers. Along with thick-cut bacon and a fried egg, sourdough comes layered with heirloom tomatoes, arugula, and pesto aioli. The Outlaw is for those seeking a filling breakfast burrito: a tortilla packed with eggs, black beans, potatoes, and avocado. Those with an even bigger appetite can add meat to the mix. It all comes together when dressed with chipotle sour cream. If the sea nearby has you craving fish, choose the Smoked Trout Bagel. It arrives with the standard toppings of cream cheese, tomato and onion, and it’s absolutely loaded with smoked trout.

Menu options for those with a breakfast sweet tooth include hotcakes and French Toast Bread Pudding. Healthier fare is available, too, such as oatmeal and yogurt with fruit and granola. The menu is small, but there really is something to please everyone.

Most seating is inside, but there are a few picnic tables to the side of the front door. It can fill up fast later in the morning, but the dining room has plenty of space for larger families and groups. You probably should consider arriving early anyway because breakfast is served only until 11:00 am.
