Tesuque Village Market

Review by: Roadfood Team

A grocery store and a restaurant in one!

The Tesuque Village Market is both grocery store and restaurant; and the latter does a booming business in and out of tourist season. Unless you get here early you may have to wait for a table, but the meal you will have is well worth the time.

And they have Margaritas

If you’re feeling celebratory, why not begin your meal with margaritas made with 1800 Blanco rum and Cointreau? While these drinks are more acidic and tart than we are accustomed to, we don’t have any difficulty quaffing them down.

What should I eat at Teseque Village Market?

Begin your meal with a cup of tortilla soup and you’ll wish you had ordered a bowl. This soup is made with roasted tomatoes, garlic, onion, Anaheim chiles, red chile, and jalapenos in chicken broth, topped with cotija cheese, pico de gallo, and tortilla chips. It is absolutely the best tortilla soup I have ever had–anywhere! The flavors are rich, deep, and perfectly blended with no one ingredient dominating.

Ordering anything with seafood can be dicey in New Mexico, but tomatillo shrimp enchiladas are just perfect. The shrimp are plump and juicy; the tomatillo sauce complements, rather than overwhelms, the shrimp. This is a dish I could eat again and again. The combination plate, which includes a shredded pork tamale, a beef taco, and a cheese enchilada, is mostly satisfying. The tamale and enchilada are smothered with green chile and melted cheese, but the taco is bland and uninteresting.

If you are traveling north from Santa Fe, you might well consider a visit to The Tesuque Village Market.
