Taste of Aloha

*THIS RESTAURANT IS PERMANENTLY CLOSED*

For a different kind of hoagie, try this Hawaii-inspired variation made of roast pork smothered in pineapple BBQ sauce and topped with kimchi slaw on an Italian roll!

This restaurant closed in 2014. They later opened a food truck but that shut down in 2018. The owners have hoped to start again but so far no sign of a new operation.

Sometimes the best finds seem to be made when you ask that out-of-the-blue “do you know of anywhere cool to eat around here….something different”. That’s how we found Taste of Aloha. It is a little tricky to find as it is in a non-descript building that we may have just driven by if we hadn’t been told to “look left after you pass under the railroad bridge”. We were greeted by the friendly owner (and terrific aromas) upon entering and when I asked what the best thing on the menu was, his reply, “it’s my menu, everything is good”, I took a pause. How often do you hear that? How often is it true?

I suspect this time the answer is true in this case. We settled on the Kahlua Hoagie (juicy, roasted pork, smothered in a pineapple BBQ sauce and topped with kimchi slaw on an italian hoagie roll) and Kalua Pua’a (pork shoulder butt rubbed with sea salt and slowly cooked using liquid mesquite smoke mixed with chopped cabbage). Both were juicy and delicious. They had a side of really good macaroni salad as well (highly recommended). We opted for orange cupcakes and fruit punch to round out our meal.

Everyone around us seemed to be having a similar experience as ours….lots of finger licking and satisfied looks. Looking forward to our next visit!
