Taco Taco Cafe

San Antonio is Taco Central

Are you searching for the very best San Antonio Texas tacos? Consider Taco Taco. In a city with so many excellent taquerias that standing out is a challenge, Taco Taco really does stand out. (Its claim to make “the best tacos in America” is worth serious consideration.) As in all the city’s top-flight places, Taco Taco rolls out the tortillas by hand. So when you come for breakfast or lunch, you can count on a freshly made tortilla, hot off the griddle. These beauties don’t need any filling whatsoever to taste delicious.

Beef vs. Chicken

But, oh, the barbacoa! Here you have the tenderest, most unctuous smoky beef imaginable. They slowly roast it, judiciously season it, and load it into the taco in great shredded clods of beefy succulence. Juice fairly oozes from this beef as you bite it. The meat itself rates so high that you really don’t want any other ingredients to distract from its supreme goodness. On the other hand, a chicken taco revels in a layer of refritos (refried beans) and a sprinkle of cheese. In the morning, a potato and egg breakfast taco reaches heights when generously dolloped with the kitchen’s marvelous salsa.

Puffy Tacos Are A Passion

You cannot explore San Antonio Texas Tacos without serious consideration of puffy tacos. They contain pretty much the same ingredients as ordinary tacos. But the wrap has a whole other character. They fry these tortillas just enough for them to swell and soften, yielding a pillow-like envelope reminiscent of New Mexican sopaipillas.

Specialty Tacos

One other category of Taco Taco tacos you don’t want to miss: “specialty tacos.” They make these on double-wide tortillas so that each one is a mighty meal. The specialty El Norteno contains sizzled chicken (or beef) with beans, slices of avocado, cheese, peppers and onions. The Fiesta is fajita-grilled chicken with chunky pico de gallo.

Meals begin with excellent tortilla chips and that salsa, which I find completely impossible to stop eating until all chips are gone or the main course arrives.

Expect to wait for a table at meal time. The place is tiny and its goodness is no secret.
