Scottish Bakehouse
Review by: Emily Madsen
Showcasing local ingredients in baked goods and meals, Scottish Bakehouse is a diamond in a sea of Vineyard cafes. Open year around, which is a novelty in the winter months, and serving the most bang for your buck, the Bakehouse holds the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Serving what may be the best breakfast sandwiches on the island as well as house-made entrees with local veggies and meats, it offers something for every appetite. Couple that with a busy and energized atmosphere and you’ve got a must-stop on the Island
The breakfast sandwich is the top choice of many visitors. In an English muffin (or on GF bread), the Bakehouse stacks a perfectly fried egg, meat of your choosing, and ‘the works,’ whatever you desire. It focuses on basics and loads them up — no wimpy fillings here. The thing people love most, aside from fresh and delicious ingredients, is that Bakehouse leaves sauce choices up to you. Each customer can add whatever their heart desires. Known as the perfect hangover cure by many, this is a must!
On days when you’re looking for more greens and variety on your plate, Scottish Bakehouse offers an immense variety of main dish options as well as side dishes that range from rice and beans to local kale or homemade vegan slaw (to die for!). All meats, ranging from pork, chicken, and more for carnivores to quinoa burgers and tofu for vegetarians are made in house with a unique Scottish Bakehouse flavor. Brazilian chicken, grilled to perfection, is a mouthwatering winner. If you’re feeling too indecisive to create your own meal, there are pre-made salads and hot dishes like stir fry and coconut tofu. The most popular dish is the Brazilian plate: rice, beans, slaw and meat of choice. It is hearty enough for the hungriest visitor.
Beyond savory options, Scottish Bakehouse sweets demand attention. What a tantalizing array of baked goods! Gluten free, vegan, and full-on regular treats entice anyone who walks in the door. Using local fruits, nuts, and other ingredients, the flavors are constantly changing with such options as gluten free rhubarb anise citrus cookies topped with white chocolate and pistachios. You can’t go wrong with any sweet.
Whether you’re in a hurry or looking to hang out for a while, the Scottish Bakehouse has a charismatic and welcoming atmosphere. When the weather is good, many people choose to sit at the picnic tables or porch right outside and enjoy their goodies. With cheerful staff and fabulous food, who wouldn’t want to stop here?
