Pushkin’s Restaurant
Review by: Lori Rice
Pushkin’s Restaurant is a top gluten-free establishment in Sacramento’s Midtown neighborhood. A modern, welcoming space with indoor and outdoor seating, the restaurant serves a winning brunch with two menus – a full vegan menu and a standard brunch menu that includes breakfast meats and eggs. A bakery case overflowing with flaky pastries and tender muffins also lines the front counter for those who wish to stop in for only a coffee and a sweet treat.
Coffee comes from San Francisco’s Ritual Coffee Roasters and shares space on the menu with multiple specialty espresso drinks. A few signature cocktails, wines, and ciders are also available.
Do begin with Seasonal Berry Coffee Cake. Baked into the shape of a large muffin, it is loaded with berries that are surrounded by a dense, but delicate cake and topped with a crunchy crumble. If you are with a larger group, you can also order a full basket of baked goods to share.
From the vegan menu, the Adult Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup provide the combination of an inventive plant-based sandwich with a comforting classic. Pepper cheese made from cashews is spread on toasted gluten-free bread with pesto and piled with arugula and tomato slices. Slightly spicy, it is the right dipper for the rich and creamy soup.
Sunnyside Chicken Rolled Tacos are served in a shallow bowl over mashed black beans and loaded with toppings for a beautiful blend of Mexican-inspired flavors. Shredded chicken rolled in corn tortillas is transformed into crunchy, tacos. Sunnyside eggs, avocado, salsa, and cheese complete the meal.
Pushkin’s opens at 8:00 a.m. for brunch on the weekends. I you don’t want to wait for a table, arrive soon after they start serving.
Don’t confuse this restaurant with Pushkin’s bakery, which is in another part of town.
