Marie’s Coffee Deli
Review by: Miranda Cilfone & Kris Masilamani
The hustle and bustle of downtown Los Angeles can be overwhelming, so if you are on the search for a simple cup of coffee and a hot breakfast in a low key cafe, Marie’s Coffee and Deli is the place to go.
Here we found all our favorite coffee and espresso classics and an extensive menu of breakfast sandwiches and bagel masterpieces. The display case of baked goods and packaged salads beckoned, but trust us: freshly made sandwiches are the way to go.
We tried a cinnamon croissant pastry with toasted almonds that looked quite pleasing but was too dry and just didn’t quite hit the spot. Hot breakfast choices saved the day. The Breakfast Caprese Sandwich was stacked with a thick egg patty, fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil leaves, and basil pesto slathered on toasted wheat bread. It is quite a strong taste and variety of flavors for breakfast, but it definitely did its job to power us through the morning.
The Smoked Salmon bagel was also a delight with capers, onions, tomatoes and just the right amount of cream cheese on a bagel of choice. Our bagel was toasted but soft in the middle and easy to bite.
Coffee wasn’t anything exquisite but was smooth going down, had little bite and only a slight aftertaste. If you’re looking for a sweeter morning pick me up, we recommend the Caramel Macchiato, which comes topped with frothy goodness and swirls of caramel sauce.
This small, street-side family shop is a good place for a casual and quick cup of coffee and great bite to eat. Try any of the breakfast or lunch sandwiches and leave feeling satisfied.
